are they any good ? ..... i have thousands of music files on my lappy , and think if i transfered to a external hard drive along with some other files it would clear my pc of poo, and make it run faster , so i could access my files when i want ...... are they any good for this purpose ?.... i have a old ex hard drive but havent connected it to this lappy yet

Personally i use them a lot to back up verious stuff (6TB in total i have).I look at it at least if your hard drive gives up totally, stuff is easy to get back. But up to you if you get a portable one or external one.

the one i have is 1tb

I brought an additional 2TB one from Ebuyer couple months ago, got a caddy with it to for like a fiver.

Well worth it mate, all that data soon clocks up, I am only about 1TB behind sp00k lol.

Western Digital Caviar Green is what you should search for, good, smooth running and cool hard drives. Then you just need to buy the caddy it slots into (you buy the hard drive as an OEM product on its own as an internal hard drive).

this is a toshiba , it doesnt have a cradle , its a sort of black rectangular box with sockets on it lol

i keep all my music files on a usb hard disk. there easy to use in differant computers

The black rectangular box is its Caddy mate, there will be an internal HDD inside it.

i would need a big hard drive for my music i recon at least 2tb

yeah go for it Peter, i have a couple i use for backups and stuff.

I have a measly 500GB external Seagate jobby but my laptop spluttered last month and that reminded me to back everything up.It's not if it will pack up but simply when.:thumbs

External Hard Drives

I have a 1 TB Aldi special Medion I think it was £79.00 its brilliant and has an extra connector SATA ? for high speed transfer that I use it just slots into the top of my PC.

For the laptop it has seperate power supply etc.

im thinking that the more programs / files i move to a external hard drive , the faster my lappy will run .... ie not cluttered up ..... am i correct in this assumption ? :nenau

Partly Peter, but your issues isnt the amount of files on yoru drive, because iits reasonably well defragged, your problem is you have some issues (that I dont yet know the details of) that are slowing network systems down. Could be some issuesin vista, a dodgy update that needs reinstalling, or lack of updates, like cars, theres ahell of a lot of things it could be! Hopefully today I eliminated SOME.

does it cost mega bucks clive or is it free ? ( i like that word )

is 7 that much better then Clive? I have a pent dual core t4200 2ghz 2ghz, 3gig mem 32 bit vista sp2 with constant updates, is this good enough to run 7, my machine seems to be slowing down as well and I store virtually nothing on the internal drive, just the operating system and programs that I use, all data goes to USB chips and sometimes an external HD, so I can reinstall the operating system on a clean computer very easily, the only downside is I have to download all the MS updates again, as I have not found out how to save and the copy them back, Rick

well, I install this OS on pretty much every machine in our business, so thats hundreds, and the same for all my clients, and its by FAR the best Windows OS to date. Forget vista. Win 7 runs much faster, is more stable, has more useful features and is, well, just better! In our business, its allowing for a much more stable environment than XP or Vista ever gave us, and staff actually make use of the extra features it ships with. We have found it runs very well in deed on low spec hardware, im talking old pentium 4's with 1 Gb ram-these run excellent, so yes, your system will be more than capable. Lets put it this way, I runa simple HP Dual Core pc, with 2Gb ram, and apart from a virus every now and then, i have had NO trouble at all with the OS itself, where before i had constant issues with vista, and constant issues with XP.

Load up times for me, are just about a minute, just over, from pushing the button, to having a desktop i can begin working on, and that a vast improvement over Vista, which for me was taking into the minutes and once in windows, still not useable. I also find that even running multiple apps (office, Lync, IE, remote apps, ts connections, phone manager etc etc) all at once, is handled much better in windows 7 compared to any machines with vista or xp.

I could go on, but i wont.
