hi all

On the ear ol again.

My trucks front pipe is blowing at the flexi pipe.

Some guidance on what are the pitfalls when changing it.

Is the Terrano the same as the mistral?

Can I replace just the flexi pipe

Thanks in advance Paulp

As far as I'm aware Terrano and Misty are the same exhaust but no harm checking I suppose. I can tell you that my project truck which is the TDi has no electronic sensors screwed into it, it has three studs that fasten it to the turbo and I think these snap for the fun of it. The other end is a oval shape with two bolts. If you look on eBay there are flexi repair sections which I thought long and hard but ended up deciding not to go that route.

Hope my experience helps.

It's not a very pleasant job removing the front downpipe, you really need to be flexible and have a decent socket set :(

Do yourself a favour if you plan on keeping the truck for some time and replace with a decent quality stainless one to avoid having to do the job again.

Give the nuts a good squirt of penetrating oil & leave for as long as you can.
Say maybe Friday day & do the job Sunday. This should make life easier. There's nothing worse than a snapped off stud. A little preparation can save a whole lotta work :thumb2

I did wonder who would post a comment. It's usually me :D

It's good to get some back :thumb2 :D :lol

I tried this method and I got a rash and ruined a few pairs of boxer shorts:lol
Still managed to shear a bolt as well:lol

Replaced exhaust on my T2 last year, including downpipe. Went OK, but apart from the nut squirting I also gave the area a thorough clean with a steel brush, to remove rust :)

thank you

Dear all

Thank you very much for the help and advice

just to add, I did the downpipe replacement on saturday. went for mild steel because cost :augie

anyway, squirted the three nuts with plusgas and left for a while while i removed the two rearmost bolts at the flange. these came off easily enough :thumbs

next was the U bolt holding the pipe to the bracket. yeah, they werent coming undone. so i removed the whole bracket :thumbs

finally, i went to the three nuts up top. hard to reach, but as suggested, used several extensions and a knuckle joint, and all three came off intact. result!!

removing the pipe was not so easy. in the end, after trying just about every angle i could, i relented and removed the gearbox crossmember. nice and easy, 4 bolts, two nuts and a jack, and then rotate the crossmember like a propeller to remove from between the two bars (torsion bars??). that way i had loads of clearance to remove the pipe.

cut the U bolt off the aforementioned bracket and replace with a new one, remove the top of my thumb on the nice sharp gasket, and replace everything in reverse.

job done. the old one was totally gone, so the terrano is now nice and quiet (relatively speaking :lol )

cheers
