Following on from my last thread about the exhaust smoking when I rev car in stationary position. Yes it is a 2.7 TDI, 1998 model with 66,000 on clock. Being an ignorant git, can some please tell me what a MAF is. Also my reverse light is not working but can not find the first port of call i.e. the fuse for it. Any one tell me where it is. Checked the books but no mention of this fuse. :doh:doh:doh
THANKS WADEY.

first port of call would be to check the bulb in the lamp , then if it hasnt blown at least you have a spare , then check fuse box , as far as i know on your model its to the right of the steering wheel lower down ( behind a flap i think ) a maf refers to mass air flow , which is a little " thingie " ( technical term ) that is on your air intake and sends signals from there to your ecu

Once you've checked the bulb, check the light loom too, as they are prone to failure.

The MAF or Mass Air Flow meter is a device in between the airfilter box and the inlet to the turbo with a couple of wires attached to it.

Basically it tells the ECU how cold the incoming air is so the ECU can adjust fuelling (colder air = denser = more oxygen = better burn of more fuel injected).

Two types; Hitachi (VERY expensive but rarely fails) and Bosch (cheap but prone to failure because of the way it self-cleans).

Disconnecting it and seeing no change in (crap) performance would normally confirm that its bolloxed, but I didn't think it caused smoke problems, only rough/poor running....
