Can anyone give me some advice regarding removing the front pipe please. Looks like someone has already replaced a stud with a bolt, dreading a bolt snapping.

Before someone says heat the only heat source I have is a plumbers blow lamp.

if it is the gas type on a hose then use it, get it nice and hot and then spray release oil spray all over it till the oil stays on the bolt without evaporating, then heat and spray again, only then try removing the bolts/nuts, once you get them moving a bit, work them back and forth, do not go one way only unless they are free and easy, if you have the paraffin type or gas container on the torch then you will struggle to get it in to the right place, Rick

Sadly Rick it's the torch on a bottle, bottle is about a foot tall so I'm sure you'll of seen the type before. Still lets get the welding sorted out first and then worry about the exhaust.

I dreaded taking the down pipe off my exhaust, it looked just as rusty as yours in the picture. But in the end I managed to get it off without issues. Only thing I did was hose the nuts with release oil for a few days...

I would wire brush the threads. Then plenty of plus gas (other releasing agents available ).

Front pipe removal woes !!

I have to admit when it comes to front pipes I go to an exhaust centre as they seem to have the equipment and knowledge plus a ramp to sort these things out.

Takes me back to the last time (circa 1989) I ever changed my own front pipe I was short of cash so bought a complete Bosal system from a local trade outlet for my Manta GT/E. I got all the old system off with just the front pipe to go. As I recall it was held on with 6 studs & nuts one of which was missing.

With nicely grazed elbows from working on my back under the car I vowed never to do it again and haven't !
The wife had never see me grunt, sweat and swear so much the job was made extra difficult as it was raining through most of the day !

Never again - best of luck with the task you face !!

Erm, sorry to call me thick n all, the only source of heat you have...

It's an exhaust with burning gases inside, it's gonna get pretty hot itself :naughty

Just give it some beans :D

But yeah, lots of soaking with rost off or similar, and best from the pipe itself :thumb2

Well one problem with the engines heat is I can't run it on the road as it's not got all three features we need to be legal so stuck with my driveway.

Going to give them a good soak in plus gas every day or so before it gets touched.

Got to say though I am tempted to take it in to the garage that will be moting for me, just the extra cash I don't want to pay and I had wanted to do the car myself.

Well you could always ask them, soak it first still as it will reduce the labour time it requires :thumb2

My thoughts too Alex.

Dam well enjoying doing this truck though. Will be posting photos on the project thread soon, run out of argoshield so nowt else to do :lol

When faced with this I personally cut the protruding thread off so your not winding it all through and risking it picking up, that's if you can get to it. Other than that run the engine until normal operating temp and put some gloves on.. Good luck.

My Maverick one wasn't much better than that and when I got it off the thread that wasn't exposed to the extremities was immaculate like it'd just come out the factory

slight flaw there Alex, idling it will not get very hot, blow torch can get it glowing, makes a big difference, Rick

strike it with the welder, should get hot pretty quick maybe enough to shock it

Well last night my son removed the broken sections of centre pipe and also the rear section. Today hes had a go at the front pipe, the bolt that you can see in the picture is fine and came out without problems but the two nuts on the studs are stuck. Apparently he tried 12mm and 13mm sockets but neither fitted correctly so he tried imperials but nothing seemed to fit.

Started the truck up today after reassembling the abs pump and filters, its was flipping loud:lol only the front pipe on and even that is goosed:lol
