can i use ep80w-90 in my gearbox?it is a castrol transmission oil

can you really fill the gearbox thru the top inside the car cause that be well easier

I never done it but if Toolbox says you can then I would say go for it, however I'm sure there will be more replies as people get back online after Christmas.

All the oil guides I've got at work recommend 80w90 so you'll be fine putting that in there.
I've no idea about the filling unfortunately as I'm a auto man meself :wink:

80W/90 will be ok as long as it is GL4 and not GL5 spec, you may find the gear change stiffer due to the thicker oil especially when cold.

You can fill through the top but you have to remove the centre console and then the gear stick gaiter, you then will have to remove the 4 bolts fastening the top down and lift out the main gear stick and top all in one.
It’s then a case of poring the oil in and replacing everything and possibly using a little gasket sealer on the top.
You still should remove the level plug so you know how much you have put in, when it runs out replace the plug and if yours is the 3.5ltr capacity add a little more on top.

when you say top all i n one do mean transfer box aswell cause i thurt they needed different oils

Sorry, what I meant was after removing the 4 bolts the gear stick and cover come off in one piece.

The transfer box is separate and will need filling from underneath.

Just thought I would double check whilst on the subject....years ago gear oil was in bottles with a convenient tube attached to aid filling, do they still use this method? If not I will have to make something, I have already read about the garden hose and funnel...... what else?

most oil comes in proper bottles unless you buy 25+ litres or molyslip,and toolbox what would we do without you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Much easier to fill from under the vehicle............if you have the right equipment

Bought one of those oversized 'injection guns' (like an icing gun but bigger) many years ago and have never looked back.

What do most of you use to fill up the boxes underneath, I have been looking at clear plastic pipe in B&Q....but what do you use.

I use a length of garden hose, with a funnel in the end tied to the fuel filter. Feed it down from the rear nearside of the engine, then into filling hole. Cover the end of the pipe as you feed it down to prevent any dirt entering the pipe.
Make sure the last few inches going into the box goes downwards, or the oil will drip back along the pipe. Molyslip added first then washed down by gear oil. It helps to warm the oil first.
By the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, the oil has all gone in..
When you have finished with the hose, cover the ends and use again later.

In my shed i keep a couple of those bottles with the little tube as small quantities of gear oil still use them, you can then cut the bottom out to make a funnel or keep screwing the top of an refilling, a bit slow but it does work!
