Hi, new to the forum and looks like it's well worth it..I have a Maverick 2.7td 'M' Regd. Has ran ok since I bought it 18 months ago only done 6 k in it for towing horse trailer etc, I decided to change the air, fuel and oil filter this weekend as it was due to be done and Mav wouldnt go any quicker than 60mph previously did 70-75 with some left, so I thought change fuel filter and air filter job done!! How wrong could I be. Air filter easy, Fuel filter fitting easy but since yesterday cant get it to rev above 2000rpm and plumes of grey/ white smoke, have checked the obvious bled injectors, and primed through pump on top of filter but to no avail. there is a tapping noise that wasnt there before sounds like its coming from fuel pump area but hard to locate exactly. The only thing that overcomes this is vigarous pumping of the primer then the tapping dissappears and the engine will rev freely with no smoke, but as soon as you stop pumping it dies and smokes really bad again!! I have read a couple of threads and it seems to be possibly mini fuel filter which i will try and do tomorrow as I am lucky I am off work this week and / or the MAF sensor!! I havent a clue where this MAF is and what to do so any advice would be really helpful as I have had 2 days of nothingness really and am really peed off..lol
Please help..cheers Rich

Sounds like the fuel filter has not sealed and is letting in air. This has happened before to people, sometimes cheaper filters don't seem to fit correctly.

Thanks for the quick reply Jim, I bought the fuel and air filter from my local Allen ford dealership on friday and werent cheap..lol.
I also thought this might be the case and removed it twice again today to check seal and whether it was full or not, the seal looks fine and it was full of fuel, so went through the priming again but to no avail, it was a bit restricted before i changed the filter which is one of the reasons for doing it but it has never smoked before not even on cold start up. I took it for a run late this afternoon and it was fine till it hit 2500 revs and then died a quick death my mate followed me and said it did not smoke until i reached 50mph then it piled out. It will now only rev to 2000rpm but with big smoke!! I walked away from it in the end as i didnt want to damage it with a big wrench.
do you not think it might be worth checking the mini filter or is that unlikely to be the cause?
Also mine is a mk1 mav so does it have the MAF sensor as there are no wires on air box and is upright not laydown.
Cheers Rich..

im sure yours is the same as mine (L reg) and mine doesnt have a maf sensor.
as for the smoke it sounds like under fuelling, perhaps a air lock somewhere?
have you tried gravity feeding the pump?

Have you primed it until the the primer knob is hard and won't go any further ?

When the engine is idling is the primer knob still hard ?

Sometimes it still needs priming while running to keep the fuel coming through to get rid of the air locks in the system, then eventually goes hard.

Might pay to check if they gave you the correct fuel & air filter.

The other option would be to put the old filter back on and see what happens.
The other is, it could be a incorrect air filter not letting enough air in when required. I had a incorrect air filter and lost revs about 2,500 or under load.

Hi Thanks for the help so,far. Firstly Im not sure what you mean by gravity feeding the pump if you could expand a bit I'm sure I'll get it in the end. The pumping knob on the top of the filter is not hard as i said if you pump it you can rev the mav up to the red and no smoke but as soon as you stop the smoke returns!! Even called RAC out this morning and he just wanted to tow me somewhere and told me it was either my pump or my turbo!!
Cheers Rich

Gravity feed - hook up a small can above the engine plumbed directly to the inlet of the filter (to rule out air leak on the supply side) and / or directly to the injector pump to rule out air leak around the filter head etc.

Given that you say pumping the primer allows you to rev fully, then I would guarentee an air leak around the filter- very likely caused by disturbing it. Did you oil the sealing ring before spinning the new filter on?

WOW What a difference.....Mini Filter....15 years of crap took hour to clean it but revs on the limit and compared to before feels like a ferrari!!! lol
Mrs well happy too :thumb2
Thanks to everyone.....used the walk through download for guidance...what a forum!!!!!!!!

oh yes

and Im here to make it even better!!!

thisof the cash you just saved by not taking it to Nissan main dealership..

i'm seriously going to have to check mine, so many people seem to benefit from this mini filter clean!!

where is it on a tdi?

HAve a look in the downlaod section.

jsut remember not all have them...

sorry, just a quick question about the download for cleaning the mini filter.
why cant you just use a socket and extension bar to undo the banjo bolt that is hiding the mini filter?
are there any pitfalls apart from perhaps dropping things if you are not careful?

Ive no idea,

im all for the easy life..

give it a go, tell us what happends..

well done it my way!
took 2 mins to get the filter out!
sorted!
17mm banjo bolt, undo, get a magnet on your extension bar and pull the banjo bolt free with the sealing washer.
get a welding rod and bend it to a small hook shape and insert it through the spring.
push your hook gently until it reaches the bottom of the small fuel filter and thenhold the make shift hook over until you catch the filter.
pull up and out of hole and hey presto!:clap
jobs a goodun!:bow

so i bet you took some PICS..

so you can do a wright up for making into a DOWNLOAD..

if not .
go BACK an do it again!!
