My 2001 t2 appears to be running very hot indeed. The temprature gauge reads just below half way which I believe is normal however when you feel the top pipe running in to the radiator after a short 5 mile journey it is extremely hot. This is to the point that you can't put your hand on the pipe and squeeze it???? Any ideas???

gauge about right, can you hold the bottom hose,if so and your header tank is up to the level and with rad cop off when cold its full to bottom of neck no worries.i assume there are no leaks at all.hot ambient air will make top hose feel hotter.

When the thermostat gets to 83c it will open, and radiator will start getting warm. I doubt you could grab a hose at 83c without burning your hand.
Sounds normal to me, why suddenly the concern?
If in Doubt measure the actual temperature of the head, block and top hose and rad.

Are you hearing the fan roar like a mad thing? If its getting warm that'll kick in.

Not sure how to check if the viscous coupling is faulty though.

This was the other question, I have two fans, one behind the radiator which is running off of a belt and another fan on to what I thought was the aircone rad??? This rad is smaller and lower down then the large radiator with belt driven fan. The front fan wasn't on at all however the belt driven fan is always running????

The smaller fan sounds like air con fan.

The large fan should be directly between the rad and the engine. Its mounted on a viscous coupling which is on the waterpump and yes it does have a belt on it. This fan does turn pretty much all the time. When you start up from cold and set off you hear a real good roar, thats the viscous fan. When its hot I hear mine kick in and out but has to be hot. These couplings can go faulty but not often. The coupling is part of the waterpump.
Im not saying your coupling is faulty but Im sure someone will be along soon to tell you how to test it.

I do have a new water pump which I shall be putting on soon so fingers crossed that will sort any potential issues out. Thanks for all the replies.

the viscous fan will or should roar for the first few minutes of starting, but this does not indicate that all is well, on the front of the fan is a bi metal coil spring that as the air temp gets hotter makes this spring coil up so bringing the fan on, problem is that as it rarely operates the spindle gets stuck so no fan when it is needed, the only way to test this is grip the spindle with pliers and see if it turns, it should be free if not new pump/fan assembly needed, Rick

All sounds normal to me top pipe will be pretty hot when up to operating temp and if temp guage is ok and rad is full of coolant leave it alone as not broke don't fix is key motto

So water pump changed however the rubbish plastic thermostate housing has cracked and now it's leaking fluid from the bolt
. Anyone got another decent one hanging around??? :thumb2

Common problem, see if you can get the ally one from an older truck:thumbs

I take it that will fit mine, a 2001 t2??? If so I think the wizard that is rick may have one that I can purchase :thumbs
