when you remove your fuel filter, is it full? if not check fuel lines because prob dragging air, common at rear of chassis on these but mine was small rubber lines on top of tank (take up boot carpet and remove plate in floor) i changed a few bits on mine before i did this and all i needed was a fu#king hose clip!

Thanks guys for your replys lots to go at, I will look at all these things over the next few days, Ive been away for a few days so not had time to check in.

This is the latest as far as i can tell the car uns as it used to when I first got it. All I have done is replace the maf sensor after the initial breakdown.

Where we are at now is the car starts first time perfect glow plug eml light on car starts they go out eml light never comes on whilst driving.
Pulls normal no misfire detectible.

Rev car stationary quick blip misfire at around 2-2500rpm puff of smoke as it misses, rev it up steady not sudden press on throttle no misfire emission clean.

but also now on the odd acaasion when my wife and my friend had a drive they said it started up great put it into 1st gear to set off and wouldnt rev up or pull. they said they just turned it off on the key restared it and all was fine again straight away. I am worried now as i am towing my caravan to York next week and can see it know broken down on the hard shoulder !!!!!!!!!!! Although at the moment its running and driving great apart from what i have mention above, could it be the throttle pedal can you self check this how do you know if its fly by wire type ?

Thanks

Guys

Guys

Right, the first 'symptom' you mention is completely normal. ALL the TDi's will do it to a certain extent. It is caused by poorly written software in the ECU, since they thought, well who he going to be sat in neutral revving the engine ??

Secondly, this can be caused by acouple of items, first port of call would be to pull any codes in the ECU and go from there. Pedal Postion Sensor would be my first inspection...

Hi Timbo will ignore the miss when revving stationary then.

I will try to read the fault codes and see if any stored as the eml light has never come on other than when it should when igniton on goes out as soon as started.

As for the Pedal position sensor can it be tested or is it just a case of fit a new one and see how it goes ? Also where is it located is it above the pedal in the footwell ?
Could this cause the fault where it wont rev up and a lack of power, for the intitial breakdown:thumb2 ?

Thanks

Simon

valve in post.beggining to sound just like mine before new diesel pump was fitted.the last straw was when wife said she went to drive off got into 2nd and nothing ,switched off started again and fine.

if its got a fly by wire throttle pedal then usually where pedal bolts to floorpan is where the pedal pot is situated, you can usually see that a wire harness is attatched.
best way to check is using a sensor checker or oscilloscope by backpining the sensor, you can use a digital multimeter but not so easy to see if is a glitch, using an anologue multimeter (but nowadays has to have a certain level of resistance) is better as you can watch needle moving through different voltage but as is only I think 5 volts max you have to watch carefully.
Oh sod it, easier to check by using another one and see if it makes a difference and is quicker anyway, or just try squirting an electrical cleaning spray inside yours is always worth trying.

CPS, crank position sensor, again easy to check by replacing, or try taking it off and cleaning any crap off it and out of end of hole where sits as sometimes lots of crap on end, static build up can also cause probs and is removed sometimes just by touching it.
At one time back in early nineties lots of XR3i's and XR2's suffered something terrible from static, lots of callouts, cured by touching, easy £30 callouts.

Something to try anyway if not hole in fuel pipe or other probs as mentioned above.

Thanks guys this lot will keep me busy over the weekend is the crankshaft sensoe located near the front botton pulley, just so i know where i am looking.

thanks

Zexel - front timing case.
Bosch - flywheel housing, under the inlet manifold.
