Can you tell me if it is normal my 1996 mistral auto when I accelerate stay for ages at 4000 before going to to 4th gear (or 5th if there is one)

I kind of need to remove my foot to the pedal to let the car pass the next gear.....

probably depends on the "mode" you are in. i noticed with Petes, when hes in go fast mode (and chuff me does it go), it does rev to 4k rpm before changing, but Pete will be along shortly to set us straight..!!

to the left of your steering wheel you have a 3 position switch ... the switch functions are ....

power mode

auto mode

economy or hold mode

for everyday driving leave the switch in the centre position ( auto mode )

if you try to accelerate too quickly , the car will automatically go into power mode .... it sounds like this is happening to you ,a little yellow light on the switch indicates that you are in power mode , this setting prolongs gear changes.

a quick way to stop this is to either lift off the loud pedal , or flick the switch back into the centre position.

avoid kickdown as this will only make the car go into power mode

economy or hold mode is mainly used for motorway driving , but can be used in snow too, its like setting off in second gear

hope this helps

regards

pete

Thanks

Funny enough, it is is exactly what I am doing, so I am pretty happy with the answer you gave me.

I do drive a lot and use the hold button quiet a bit and actually do like it, just did not know if driving too long on it could damage the car.

mine is a 1995 ( non inter cooled ) ... no maf , no ecu :D..... and i love it to bits , its a fantastic car :thumb2......as clivvy says once you get used to it .. it goes like stink in the correct settings :thumb2

stupid ?

Guys,

I am not a mechanic, just a normal user with a bit of knowledge.... how do I know if it is intercooled ?:augie

and over ride

Just saw the pdf, very interesting, I have no manual.... and need to get one.

When I over drive sometimes the engine gets crazy and does not really bring lots of power, is this also common ?

i dont fully understand what you mean....... expand please

no hole !

Sorry my French is coming through :nenau

It's not intercooled then.

Regarding the overdrive, when I click on it and pass a car i believe it's suppose to bring some extra power to pass it quicker.

When I do so, the rev goes in the red gets very noisy but does not deliver any more power.

leave the overdrive switch on ( ie no yellow light on dash ) ..... if you want some extra power when overtaking , drop the switch into the middle ( auto ) position ..... :thumb2

sorry

Sorry I confused you,

I am talking about the button on the automatic knob now..... (sorry, changed a bit of subject)

yes , you should leave the overdrive on , that little button on the side of the auto knob will illuminate a light on your dash if its switched off ..... you dont want that ....... well i dont anyway , for extra overtaking power i either drop a gear manually on the selector , or flick the mode switch back to auto .... this is presuming you had the mode selector in hold ?......... this is sounding complicated , but really it isnt

These old Mistrals autos are a law unto themselves aren't they, and definitely weird compared to a normal auto...the T2/Mav auto doesn't do this auto power mode thing, it has kick-down like a normal auto box should have, but you can switch 'Sport' mode (no laughing please) on which holds the gear changes as described.

Not sure what this 'hold' function is though? Have you got a 1/2nd gear position on the stick as well, and what does it actually 'hold'?.....I might be confused because of the mention of 'economy' and 'motorway' in the same sentence.....I mean on the T2/Mav, if you select 1st or 2nd on the stick, or switch OD off, it will rev to the limiter because its got nowhere else to go, but thats the only time.

So can someone describe what 'hold' does a bit more clearly please?:thumbs

Lacroupade,

if you check the link it is well explained....

The guys :D

So when I turn off the over drive (light on the dash) it goes to 4000 rev and just stay there and the car does not gain any more power ?

I'll have a look.:thumb2

All overdrive does is 'add' a couple of extra gears to the box when its switched on, to lower the gearing and improve fuel efficiency. So when you turn it off, its a bit like changing down a gear or two.....it doesn't deliver any more power per se (like say a turbo would), just higher gearing into a range where there is more power delivery.

And like all diesels theres a rev limiter at 4000rpm, so it does nothing but shout at you when it gets to that level LOL:thumb2

edit - read the pdf, what a load of gobbledygook!! Can't you tell its translated from Japanese by a 12 year-old!! I am none the wiser unfortunately. Give me a proper modern auto box thanks. The T2 just has A/T which is normal driving mode, Snow, which pulls away in a higher gear than normal, and Sport which changes up and higher revs - and of course kickdown as normal. Sounds a bit like the Mistral but the functions described in that handbook sound like a cement mixer or something LOL

lol

can't see the difference, I am french :lol
