Engine Problems

Hi All
Just had my Terrano MOT had problems with emission. It runs ok but when you rev the eingine from idle I get black smoke out of the exhaust and there is a smell of parafin I understand the smell of parafin is unburnt diesel and it 's misfiring.

I have been told I could have a turbo problem your views will be appreciated

try some of the injector cleaner first you never know
the guys on the surf forum recomend filling the fuel filter with ATF and giving it a good blast
apparently it cleans the system while replenishing the seals
please double check this as im not sure the nissan/ford pump will cope with this i know its fine on the surf
failing that fill the filter with redex

Hi arthur
Do a search on mass air flow meter ( maf ) this can case the problems your having. Not really up on them myself as mine is the older model witch doesnt have one. But do a search as thay have been discuss many times before

Giving it a good blast is a solution that is often suggested. I once had a diesel Pug that hadn't had the cam belt changed when it should (long story). It cost me a fortune to have the engine rebuilt when giving it a "good blast" after an MOT emissions failure - take care!!

Probably sounds a bit lame of me asking this but when did it last have a major service?

MAF sensor or air flow meter is dead easy to clean, I did mine yesterday. As someone said check out threads on this item. It certaily wont harm to clean it (carefully).

Hi All
I have the Terrano serviced annual same time as mot it get the injector cleaning treament then my mechanic said there play in the turbo and this my be part of the problem it's got progresily worse over the last couple of years.

I have just replaced the maf sensor for the the third time. I spoke to diesel Bob regarding the maf sensor he was of the opion once it gone it needs replacing I haven't try cleaning one, when cleaned doe's it run as normal and for how long?

Normal running it's ok it the revving from idle bit where the problem shows.

Hi All
Reconditioned the turbo and the Injectors Problem solved.

I also had a problem with a whistling Exaust it was driving the wife up the wall Took the terrano back to exhuast fitter he changed the tail pipe and that solved that problem. So at moment it 's running ok?
