5/30 sounds a bit thin to me, a recent thread suggests that 5/30 could be causing some blue smoke, as it burns the oil, I use castrol semi synthetic 10w/40
Has worked well for me, but then I don't do great mileage and tend to change it annually as it does less than 5000 miles Pa.

I used to use standard 10/40 mineral for the first 10 years..

You will need about 7 litres, but usually mine only takes about 6 with filter change....

Filter change..... If this is your first time.........GOOD LUCK.......:doh
Best to read a few posts on that task first. 2nd time is very easy, as you have learnt the technique....:clap

I had a lot of experience with this last year!

Don't touch 5/30 and go for full mineral oil, it's better even if a bit more expensive, Synthetic oil is not for these motors!

try a 10/30 fully synthetic, that's what I run on now, no smoke and no oil consumption!

I ran 5/30 fully synthetic and used more oil than diesel! Nothing wrong with the vehicle just the wrong oil.

My Nissan owners manual states that 5/30 is only good for very cold conditions, i paid the price when mine started drinking is as the weather warmed up. 10/30 is good for all year round use.

The manuals top recommendations for all weather conditions are:
10w 50, 15w 40, and 15w 50.

the 10w 30 I use is recommended from minus 20 to plus 20 centigrade, that seems good enough for me. But stick to mineral oil :thumb2

Plank, I don't normally question your posts, but I am confused with this one:nenau

So which oil is best?
Synthetic oil, or mineral oil.....

There's only one way to find out".........

FIGHT.......

confused

thanks for all the tips but which ios best in a 1997 mistral auto

manual or auto will make no difference to the engine oil, and the engines are basically the same, so no difference there either. So i would go for 10/30 or 10/40 mineral oil :thumb2

I've never seen a petrol Mistral, or a manual one come to think of it, all auto diesels in my experience :thumb2

I am using Ford's Formula E 5w/30 mineral in mine, no issues, but any CF/CG rated 10w-30 mineral / semi synthetic would be fine.

5/30 is only recommended for up to 15 degrees C, and not recommended for sustained high speed driving. I have learnt that one at my peril. If anyone wants to put it to the test feel free to call round my house I have enough 5w/ 30 fully synthetic for an oil change that you are welcome to (subject to me being able to find it :doh)!

I wouldn't go there again!

I've just come back from a little errand to europe and was at this speed [taken by passenger btw] for most of the trip back.

which is 85% of what a SWB running about 165hp will do.

No low oil pressure symptoms...

But I would agree that if previous maintanance has been lacking then a good oil does sometimes highlight weak seals etc.

Mine has full dealer history and fairly low miles and 5w 30 synthetic was still being consumed at a frightening rate, and is not recommended in the manual, so take care folks!

Synthetic or Mineral ?

My R3mR its a 2.7 Td with intercooler I use 10W/40 and buy what I can afford I have been using the Asda fully synthetic 10w/40 as at £20 for 5 Litres its as cheap as a good semi or mineral.

If you use thinner oil yes you will burn some but at least you are sure your Turbo and upper piston rings are being lubricated.

For long runs to France or the coast I suppliment with a Litre of 2T oil in a tank of fuel - it seems to run quiter and does an extra couple of mpg. I use cheap 2T oil from Morrisons.

As I change my oil every 5 or 6 K its not a huge cost compared to Diesel.
