Black Pearl is enjoying life after the engine build. However the new owner is a little worried about the high oil pressure at start up from cold. I didn't have an answer so here we are.
When I rebuilt the engine I was thrilled to see 80 plus psi on first start but then once warm it settled back down and thought nothung more of it . Should we be worried ?

Why don't you monitor it with ECUTalk live :naughty

Unless you've chopped out the 14 PIN Consult plug in a weight saving exercise :lol

That pressure is about normal Pete 80 cold is not too high, Rick

Like I said on the Facebook thread dude, my experience with the gauge in my Y61 was similar. It's down to the cold oil being thicker. As long as it drops down to normal idle pressure once at temp, I wouldn't be concerned.

I would love high oil pressure on start up - reduces wear!
Not sure of the layout of the oil pressure relief valve. Sounds great to me to have that sort of pressure. The delay is probably either a dodgy switch / sender if its electric or miles of piping if hydraulic - it takes time for an initial pressure to fall when its cold as there is no real flow to the gauge head bellows.

Thanks chaps. Nice to know it's what I assumed but didn't know for sure.
Onwards

Did you fit new main and big end bearings or have the crank reground? I think I looked through your rebuild thread a while back but only remember about honing the bores if it was your thread.

Yep new mains and big ends. Crank was well within spec so didn't do a regrind.

Its about right that Pete I wouldnt worry, Oil pressure can be a bit high when cold hence why you take a reading when the engines up to temp. If your worried stick a manual gauge on fire it up and watch it, It will soon come down as things warm up :).
