I am going to change my engine and gearbox oil this weekend
can any one recommend suitable oil's for the engine and gearbox?
and how much to put in for each?

So you are going to get your hand dirty this weekend aswell :!:  the engine takes about 8ltrs I use comma semi synthteic 15/40 and a good general gear oil of about 5ltrs have a look in the down loads to see how to do the gearbox (really worth reading first). and before you drain the engine oil make sure you can get the filter off other wise  you may end up the creek without a paddle  .

Have Fun I am doing my engine oil as well

go on opie oils website they will recommend the best for you

OILS

Just did all my oils last weekend...Look at comma oils web site it lists a full vehicle spec of thier oils which is printable for going shopping

engine with filter takes 6.2ltrs.

Do not waste money on expensive magnatec and the likes.

15w 40 mineral is all that is required.

The engine is old technology and modern oil is no good, to thin.

Getting the oil filter off was not as much of a PITA as getting it back on again 8O

Good luck sprokit

stupid question alert!

Manual gearboxes, do they need an oil change? How much oil and what type? Is there a guide?

Not a stupid question mate,

Yes it does require changing and I would advise more often than recommended, due to reliability problems. The recommended intervals are 24000miles or 2 years.
The oil spec should be SAE 75W/90 GL4
Capacity is 3.5ltrs up to 1998 I think, although I would put in 4ltrs if you can. From 1998 it is 5ltrs. If you are unsure which you have the 3.5ltr capacity has the level plug on the left side and the 5ltr capacity box has the level plug on the right side.

The transfer box will also need its oil changing this holds aprox 2.5ltrs.

Toolbox think its about time you did a download for the oil changes!
Start with the man trans 96/97 thats a good idea yes??

Don't know service hist of my motor (although cabin filter was black which i thought was the correct colour till i opened new one (brilliant white) put it in and blew myself out of the car!) So i've done the usual oil, filters etc so think it best to get the gearboxe etc changed asap too.

Mines a P plate 96/97 but when i get oil filters they always give me one with a bigger thread (which i always find out when the oils out and filters in the bin!!! ) only done 2 changes both times wrong filter once (please don't hate me) i had to put the old 1 back on (sundays bad day to find out about wrong parts) with new oil. Did the t2 change mid way thru this yr?

Can I ask a daft question now :?:

My G/B drain plug is stuck and the little garage who serviced her last couldn't unscrew it. Any ideas what to do :?:

Yes the engine changed in 1996 from the 2.7TD to the 2.7TDI with the intercooler that you have and yes they are different oil filters. Sounds like they are supplying you with the earlier filter.
Make a note of the part number of the correct filter and put it somewhere safe, no mater what the brand, your supplier should be able to cross reference it then.

Tell them to get a bigger bar on it Jim.

I found on my old T2 when I first had it, one of the plugs to be tight and the ½” square drive of the breaker bar was trying to round it out, I purchased a set of sump plug removing adaptors one of which was 13mm that is very slightly bigger than ½” with squarer corners and this combined with a 24” braker bar got it out.
It may shift with an impact wrench, the garage may have an air one ½” drive, the hammering often helps shift things.
If the plug is rounded out then you have problems and drilling out may be the only fix, or drilling a smaller hole in the centre taking out the square in the plug and re-taping a thread say to 14mm (would have to measure to be sure) Then you could fit a short setscrew with a sealing washer for a new plug, maybe.

Hammer type impact wrench at mine jim, only a couple of impact sockets though, although i have some good 6 side sockets which may take the whack.

I always turn screws/nuts/bolts clockwise before turning them anticlockwise, it loosens them up and they come out a lot easier.

if it stuck you should be able to get a 1/2 drive long socket bar or just a 1/2 drive ratchet in the drain plug, hold pressure on not snatching at it etc, should give ok, maybe heat slightly with blow lamp to loosen

Mission accomplished like I said I put 8ltrs of engine oil in "SPOT ON" that does of course inclued the oil filter

Changed my gearboxoil at the weekend, came out brown & very runny, no water contamination just basically old oil. Refilled, but for some reason 1st & 2nd are a bit clunky from cold, fine when warmed up. Probably removed some rubbish etc that was holding it all together!
