Engine oil filter "welded in?"

I need to do an engine oil and filter change. Can't get the old filter off. Have got access with difficulty via n/s wheel bay with plastic trim off but the filter is absolutely stuck tight. Have already ruined one strap spanner and wrinkled the filter housing but the (jolly little chap) won't shift. Too proud to resort to a garage. Can't see much advantage in getting at it from below because it would still need a strap spanner and I have failed with one of those . Can't resort to hammering screwdriver thro' cos I still might not shift the dear thing and then what ----HELP ! Any tips anyone.

When I worked in the garage I bought a very large pair of adjustable pump pliers for removing oil filters as you get alot more leaverage with them. Infact the last time I used them was to remove the fuel filter on my truck as it was stuck fast :roll:

Have you tried tightening it then loosening it?sometimes works,think if you got underneath you might get better leverage on it!! :?

Large jubilee clip nip up on the filter then a 7mm socket with ratchet use the ratchet as lever works everytime you will not get a better grip with anything else :wink:

I'm sure you've already done this I always make sure the car is at normal running temperature before doing an oil change.Remember years back trying to do one on a cold engine,wouldnt budge.
I always use a chain type filter remover,a bit fiddley,but works fine.

harajack----must confess I tried to do job with cold engine, Seems stupid now but I was trying to be careful not to finish up with my usual array of sore parts from hot exhausts and turbos. SHALL be trying it hot next time. Thanks for putting my brain into gear.

rsaddo----when I make my next attempt( soon) I shall have big jubilee clips handy --sounds very practical---thanks. :smile:

Sweety----you have mentioned pump pliers before; I didn't like to show my ignorance, but are they some sort of mole-grip :?: Would appreciate a description/ pic from you. They must be suited to my dilema if you have cured same problems with them.

I have a couple of Mac tools filter pliers two different sizes one are a monster pair but the smaller ones are ideal for engine oil filters, and I must say I haven’t found a filter they wont undo and they are in constant use, better than any strap wrench you can buy.

Here are a cheaper version not to sure what size these are.

Hi Toolbox :smile: Mine are Mac Tool ones :lol: but have straight jaws like adjustiable pliers/pump pliers not curved like the ones in the link. But as you have said they are so much easier than a filter strap or chain & on the plus side you don't get covered in oil if you split the filter :lol:

Is there enough room to use this type on the mav/terrano, , I use a strap wrench as it is too tight to get a chain wrench in?
I assume it is better to access it via the wheel arch with these pliers !

Hi rustic.
As you say, space is VERY tight :evil: . Can't get chain type remover in, strap just slides in tightly 8O . The only way to know if the Rolson pliers will do it is to buy one and try it. They look promisingly viscious. Might just have enough space from wheel arch area. Time will tell.
Whichever method(s) I use I shall switch my brain on this time and do it with hot engine.

when I got my truck six months ago I immediately changed oil and filter.
I had exactly the same problem the filter crumpled, I had to wack a screwdriver through it to move it...then the next problem , it would only undo so far because of the damage to the filter cylinder, 8O I had to re tighten and hammer back into some sort of reasonable shape, just so that I could undo it. :lol:

I do mine with the pliers from the top no problem, you just have to make sure all you are gripping is the filter and not a pipe or bracket behind as well. :wink:

Update on welded filter.
At last, got round to trying to shift filter again. Hot engine and a pair of new filter pliers off ebay and it moved with no probs.
Not much room to extract the filter or to wriggle the new one in but it's done now and the new oil is making the motor sound 50K miles younger.
