I changed the engine oil and oil filter today.

First of all I couldn't find the oil filter. Jacked the Terrano up on both sides so I could get a good look underneath, couldn't see it. Took the protection plate off under the engine still no luck. Eventually I admitted defeat and had my wife look for it and she spotted it in 10 seconds flat. A bit embarrassing but I took it on the chin. Why is it in such an awkward place?

Anyway I then couldn't figure how to get to it so I trawled through this site and saw that you could get to it through the passenger side wheel arch. So wheel off and release the plastic / rubber cover and I could see the oil filter. It took me half hour to get off with a rather poor oil filter tool.

Anyway job now done and everything put back together. Is it me or are the normally simple jobs a little more difficult on a Terrano?

Some photos below.

No need for a tool to remove the oil filter, unless the previous filter was screwed on by a gorilla. In the end, for me, removing the wheel and wheel arch trim took longer than actually changing the filter...

Next time you change the filter, it will be easier...
I once removed the filter with just a rubber glove on the palm of my hand, but other times I use a cheap rubber banded strap wrench, similar to what you would use on jam jar lids.

I always 3/4 fill the filter with new oil prior to fitting, as it saves starting up the engine with no oil for several seconds.:doh

Now you say...:doh
Well garages don't do that...:augie

You want one of the thin strap type filter removal tools , 6 quid on fleabay and much thinner than chain :thumb2

I see the standard pouring oil from the filter :lol

Unavoidable but good job :thumbs

I always go in from the top to change the filter but don't use a filter strap as always found them useless on tight filters I use my old trusty pair of large pump pliers as they'll shift even the tightest of filters also use the for pushing brake caliper pistons back as well:D prob to late to mention it now as you've done the job but I always lay a bin bag & old tee shirt on the front diff under the filter to catch any oil that spills out:thumbs

Thanks all.

The filter was just too tight, I couldn't remove by hand.

The "chain" filter remover tool definitely not the best for the job as I had great difficulty trying to get it around the filter. It kept slipping off and not gripping, and you just get more and more frustrated. Wouldn't recommend it to anyone!

...and I couldn't get the old oil filter out without it coming out at an angle. Hands were pretty clean until then!

But lessons learned for next time!

Yup the tilted oil filter is normal, I have a 2" body lift and still has to tilt to remove

Errr, Ummmm, well, did I mention how easy the 3.0L oil filter is to change :augie:augie:lol
I must admit...as a previous 2.7 owner, the oil filter is in a crap location.

When you have got the filter to move a quarter turn, slide a poly bag without holes under it to catch any oil. it makes it cleaner. If the engines still hot don't melt the bag by touching it on the exhaust. David.

Couple of tips for engine oil filter

Run the engine for a minute or so before hand to warm the filter slightly, makes it easier to remove

And use one of these, much easier to get in and get a grip on!!!

Also, make sure you smear the new filter with oil on the top so it makes a nice seal :thumb2

Good tip there:thumb2
My oil wrench. see below... which has had a lot of use...:augie is similar to these.
They only give a small amount of movement at a time, and you have to keep the strap very tight to start with.
For that reason, I think the one in Banshee's link would be easier to use.
