Hello Gents :)

For the 1st time in 3 yrs my Terrano 2 will not start. Everything seems normal, except the glow plug indicator light is not on at all. The starter engine turns well, but the engine is not starting what so ever.

Cheers!

are all other lights on dash on as they should be,if so its maybe a fuse,if you have a can of easystart you could try a bit in inlet engine side of maf and if it turns over and tries to start or better still it starts then almost def fuse, not sure where it is though but probably under bonnet or other one is the glow relay near battery.

Thanks for the reply panelbeater! All other dash lights are normal. Only the glow tube indicator is not showing.

Glow Plug Fuse ?

I think there is a fuse for the Glow Plug Circuit others might know where it is located.

If I remember correctly it is in the harness near the power steering reservoir, RHD vehicles, Rick

Although the light is not coming on, can you still hear the glow plug relay click from inside the engine bay?

Also, do you suspect them not to be working at the moment? Is it harder to start in the mornings?

Reason I ask this is it may be as simple as the bulb has blown in the dash.

I have had a few run in's with the dreaded glow plug relays in the past, they stupidly mounted them on the inside of the wing, not sure if this true of all the years etc. As such being in there exposes the relay terminals and connectors to the elements and mine rotted away!!!!! I've had to solder a new connector on my Terrano as the inside of the plug had turned into a weird greeny/white calcified powder!!!!

Thanks Banshee!

I can't hear the glow plug relay being activated, so I actually removed the relay, pulled off the lid and took a look inside. All seems to be OK with the relay. The relay works when I apply 12V directly(not connected to the wiring system) However, the relay is not getting any power when fitted to the wiring system. I tested it with the lid off.

All terminals look good, and it is indeed mounted inside the wing as you write.

I tested what I believe is the glow plug circuit fuse. It is a "thing" mounted on the power steering reservoir mount as Solarman writes. It seems to be OK as my tester beeps when I call the fuse so to speak.

This is not great at all :) I am kind of far away from everything out here. I need help, lots of help :)

Cheers!

you missed my first post, use easystart to get lump going,if you have some handy.other item to look at is the glow plug rail plug, white one of the 3 on top on left of engine, pull plug 2 terminals inside turn on ignition and you should get 12v across ,if not its back down the line.

From what you've written here, I would def be checking out the 80A fuse next mate :thumb2

Thank you. So I should be able to get the engine up and running with some "start helper". I will try and get some.

I am not sure I understand what you mean about pulling the glow plug rail plug/connector. I already know there are no power on the rail and plugs. I tried to measure the power to on the 1st plug with the ignition on. Nothing. Also the relay is not being activated. Maybe I am missing out on something here :)

Cheers!

Where is the 80A located?

Cheers!

Should be in the Auxiliary Fusebox, top left hand side of the engine bay, black box, pop the clips off, from memory I think they are blue and have a clear top so you can see if they have blown.

There are a few in there so swap them around and see if it solves your issue :thumb2

Thank you :) There's a "FL 75A MAIN" fuse there. I just tested it and it's good. I tested the other fuses too. All good and all connectors looks nice with no corrosion.

One thing I know is, that the glow plug relay does not get any power but it seems to be working fine when I give it 12V. This is really strange. I had very few problems with this car and it always starts very easily.

Cheers!

it may be a bad ing switch ie. plastic wire connector on back of switch these do have a habit of creating faults when they are worn just a thought as glow plug power is activated when ing switch is moved to position before start :thumb2

Surely worth looking into! Thank you very much for your time :thumb2

Cheers!

from re reading posts again i would be trying a direct feed from battery to relay and see if it starts.if it does the fault could be the main ignition switch modual that the ignition key turns, not the barrel but right at the end of the key.
as you have tested all big fuses, relay, glow plug bar it does not leave much except the wire feed from modual to relay.

Ok here's my thoughts.

If you have another key try using it. Wondered if it could be NATS playing up.

I've seen people post with a faulty ignition switch, apparently if you turn the key slowly through its stages it tends to work correctly and starts the engine.

To test if the glow plugs are actually getting their feed use a multimeter on to the actual feed circuit. I've seen people pull intercooler off to allow access direct to glow plugs or there is a row of connectors at the front of the engine just to the right. You should pick up the feed on this connectors.

Good luck and I'm sure it'll not be serious.

Faulty Ignition Switch ?

When the ignition is on is there power at the glow plug relay ?
If not then the problem might lie between the relay and the power from the ignition.
Is it possible that the glow plug relay power has its own wire from the ignition switch and the fault lies there.
If it is an ignition switch issue often some pulling and pushing of the key can make the connection.
Other thing is has the fault started out of the blue or have you done some work to the vehicle that could have disturbed something ? Had the steering column cowl off etc.

Just a thought.
