hello all, since a couple of weeks ago the engine on my nissan terrano 2.7td got noticeably louder and I can also hear a higher pitch noise (like a squealing belt but hard to tell) when I rev the engine or lift the clutch. It hasnt affected the running of the vehicle but trying to work out what it is and whether its going to cause problems in the long-run. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks, Rob S

Is it the fan noise? When you first start the car, you get the roar from the fan, does it sound the same?

The squeak could be the fan belt.

Thanks for the reply, i'll have another listen. Any idea why it would get noisier?

When you first start the motor there are two things that add to power draw on the belts, one is alternator charging at a high rate to replace the charge in the battery, the other is the viscous fan is on full power till the fluid spins out which can take several minutes, if your belts are a little slack then yes you will get squeal, so check belt tension as a first point, Rick

Try running it without the belt ?

Alternator belt tension and possibly alternator bearing is a possibility as is fan bearings/viscous drive coupling if you have one.
When you say lift the clutch are you possibly talking about a clutch release bearing noise ?
You could take off the alternator belt run it for a couple of minutes (engine cold) and just see if all the noises are still there if they have all gone then its definitely related to alternator or fan.

tip some water on the belts while it's running, if it stops you have your answer.

Good tip... Just do it at arms length, the spray goes everywhere.
