Just had a little run out in the truck & thought i'd open it up to blow out the cobwebs, the revs got to about 2800rpm & there seemed a drop in power went into 3rd & it pulled fine but it was kicking out a bit of smoke from what I could see from the street lights. Anyway pulled away hard from the next junction & the engine warning light came on:doh got home & restarted the engine & no warning light up:confused: Any ideas ?

MAF, water in fuel filter maybe or just plain old "you've cleared some shit out the engine":thumbs

Don't think the MAf is 100% but it's not dead either as it was pulling ok on the hills to Cumbria the other week, will undo the water drain in the morning (to dark & -1'c now) hopefully it's just i've cleared the crap out as i've been driving it like an old fart most of the time but this one has an EGR valve

a possible cause is the MAF icing up.
with the present cold and humid conditions it's quite possible.....

Will the fault code be stored on the ECU even tho the light didn't show up on re-start up (just let it tick over)?

As it cleared itself, most likely no DTC will be stored.
I would not worry about it too much, from your description:
booting it = high inlet airspeed
cold engine compartment
dew point....etc.

There was some heat under the bonnet as i'd done about 5-6 miles before I opened it up but know what your saying, think i'll have to give it some stick after dropping the wife off to do the shopping to see if it comes on again but think i'll shove a ball bearing in the vac pipe to the EGR to hopefully rule that blasted thing out

Let us know if the ball bearing trick works,Please....

Mine does it all the time this time of year when i set off for work at 8pm and when i boot it home at 7am
I just put it down to the cold heavy air

Well it's pulling better today in 2nd gear but in 3rd gear once you get to 3K the power starts to drop off & it won't rev past 3400/3500rpm as it just shudders it feels like it wants to but just can't. I did notice a small burst of black then blue smoke come out of the back which has never happened before.
I've put a ball bearing into the egr vac pipe to hopefully blank it off just hoping the thing isn't stuck partly open. The engine light came on again but has went out yet again after restarting. Really stuck on whats up as we have to have the truck on the road at the min

Bit of an up date, squirted a load of WD40 into the egr via where the vac pipe fits on last night & again this morning in the hope it would poss work it's way down & free up the egr if it had stuck open a bit. Opened up the drain tap on the filter & just got out pure derv so I know there's now water in there but managed to over tight the tap back up:doh:doh (little feeling in my hands these day) but luckily it's not leaking but will keep an eye on it just in case it does. Had to do a few runs today & it's been spot on & poss has a bit more power so it's either sorted itself out or maybe i've had an egr that was starting to stick a bit:confused:

mini filter?

Was thinking that but it was raining & I was wet enough after doing t he main filter & forgot I needed to move the power steering pump to get at the banjo bolt so will check once we get a dry'ish day to see if there is one or not:augie

I don't think it's the MAF if you have issues over 2500PM At those revs the maf is pretty much out of a job and the ecu should just be throwing fuel in big time.
So some kind of fuel delivery problem.:nenau
Usual candidates , fuel filter or air leak ?

I managed to do my mini filter last week without moving anything.:thumb2
Just be mindful of the two copper sealing washers, one each side of the banjo,
I nearly lost one.:doh It is a bit of a fiddly job, but possible.

Also check INSIDE the banjo bolt, mine had a filter inside it that has never been mentioned on here as far as I know.:augie

My filter appeared to be OK, but I drilled it out and replaced the banjo without it.:naughty

It's the same when you stall the engine, it self clears

always thought mini filter was only the old td, not tdi models

Whenever there's talk of Mini Filters and which car has one and which one doesn't, I always imagine a scene somewhere in the far east of Asian guys standing there waiting for the 2.7TDi blocks to roll past and doing eaney meany miney mo as to which one they fit a mini filter in and then laughing :lol

I thought that as well, but curiosity got the better of me, so I had a look! :D

Mines a 2001 TDI, as stated previously the mini filter was actually inside the banjo bolt and not where I had expected it to be.

I wonder how many people have looked and not spotted it? :nenau

can you get a pic of where the banjo bolt is ? as I have tried to solve mine rough running for ages and people are saying mini filter but I can't find it ?
