Hi Lads, i have just serviced the car again, just oil and filter having done another 6000 miles but i have noticed recently that there is more and more white smoke on startup and its not a quick to start as before. Also if you put your hand at the end of the exhaust a lot of black oil specs appear quite quickly. im just wanting to check this is normal and i am going to change the fuel filter again incase its water effecting it.

White smoke usually indicates a fuelling issue.

Start at the fuel filter is it clean and air tight, from there I'd check no gauze filter in IP if you're on a Bosch and then start running backwards down the fuel lines eventually to the swirl chamber in the tank :thumb2

Id go with lazy glow plugs. The oily specks os normal as wet diesel deposits. When is the white smoke happening

It's happening at startup. I now give it two glow plug heat ups then start and it throws out a bit of white smoke but goes away after 5-10 seconds.

If it goes away after a few seconds and isn't lumpy until the engine gets warm I wouldn't say glow plugs.

If it chunters and judders with white smoke at start up and then clears when warm I would say that was plugs :thumb2

I'd say glow plugs too. Black sooty deposits are normal I hope! That's why I cover the front of my caravan when towing. :thumb2

I 'm going to backtrack here boys on account of me not reading the entirety of the 1st post

If it's been progressively worse starting then yeah, maybe you could be down a plug or 2

Mine starts every morning with a puff of grey black smoke and misses for around 3-4 seconds due to the fact I have a broke off glow plug. but been like that for two years so unless summit drastic happens or I need to sell it'll be left alone as once started first thing in morning it dont miss a beat all day long. I have spare head ready if needed.

If you have changed your fuel filter at the service, then a good chance that's your problem. Some cheaper ones just don't seal.
Otherwise follow advice of earlier threads.:thumb2

Hi lads. After just one turn then start after glow plug light goes out it struggle so for a few seconds the rough starts with a bigger white plume of smoke then once warm it's fine. I know it's an brute of an engine so not overly worried and I've bought a better fuel filter so hopefully that cures it.

That sounds like glow plugs, do you have a multi meter dude?

Yeah ive got a multi meter how do i check? Im working on the terrano today.

Whip the Intercooler off, then pull the 2 heater hoses out of their clips and move to the side so you can get to the plugs.

Best to get someone inside to hit the ignition on while you ensure that you get 12v at them all by putting the positive probe on the head of the plug, it should read close to 12v until the relay clicks, this will prove you have a good connection along the bus bar to each plug and that your relay is working.

You can then perform another test as sometimes I've had plugs come back with 12v but they have had no tip on the end (ceramic), you can measure the resistance of them but not sure what reading you should see from the top of my head.

I'd be tempted to just remove them and do the old school jump lead trick and watch them glow if they are good :naughty

Whats the jump lead trick sounds guid?

Whats the jump lead trick sounds guid?

get the negative jump lead and attach it to the body of the plug and then get the positive lead and hold it on the tip of the plug and it should start to glow bright orange.

The results or the test are self explanatory

right i have put in a new fuel filter and now its starting a bit easier but as the engine idle droppes down in revs it starts to struggle and stutter and you have to rev it to keep it running. once warmed up its fine but wonder what i have done now?

I'm going to throw knackered batttery into the mix here. If all the above doesn't sort it out try a different/newer battery.
I had glow plug problems on my old Pug that turned out to be battery, same symptoms.

So after trying banshees glowplug tricked turns out two were faulty, now replaced it starts on the button. Thanks again lads
