Engine flush

Does anyone use an engine flush prior to changing oil and filter ? I've used Wynns etc in the past, but not anymore. The reason I ask is a chap I know, drains the old oil, put 5 litres of paraffin in, runs for 3 seconds, drains it, puts in cheap oil , runs it for 10 minutes,drains it and puts in good oil. Bizarre , but he swears by it !!! No bull, I've seen him do it. Has a bmw that's been running for 350k miles.
