cheers, what you say might have merit as when i repaired the front bumper found things a little off kilter so i figure previous owner had a bump maybe?

the middle of your three choice is what you want, timing chain and water pump, I cannot find my invoice for my parts but think the import duty was around £30 still made it a very cheap deal, Rick

cheers rick,
will sort that out as its worth it. do you know if its worth replacing the belts at the same time? with the belt on the water pump looking a little slanty and black bits on the fan would think better safe than sorry?

any idea how difficult it is to do? was going to ask local garage if i supplied parts, but just been to them for my wishbones on my probe and they charged me double what they had quaoted so not very happy atm!!

not the best mechanic, so if anyone wants a free weekend in torquay for helping me lol ive a guest bedroom and free coffee lol!!

I have only ever done the chain etc with the engine out, the hard part is the timing case is sandwiched between the head and the sump so I have always removed the sump, but this cannot be done with engine in, unless you drop the front diff, no easy job that, you can of course undo the front sump bolts and drive a wedge in each side enough to give a little clearance but very hard to inject some new gasket sealer in for reassembly, the rest is fairly straight forward, you may need a mirror to check the shiny link is in the correct place on the crank gear, and inserting the oil pump with the distributor drive ending up in the correct place will be harder in the car, other than that not a bad job and yes replace the belts no question unless you know they are less than a year old, Rick

ahh fiddly job then, will have to kowtow to mr garageman then as cant afford to get immersed in difficult engine repair as got to ready house for baby arrival in cpl months.

hopefully if parts dont take too long to arrive can actually go adventuring in it before time runs out lol

OK but do not give him the two long timing case gaskets they are not for your engine, it uses squirt sealant and two special washers for the main oil feed, the gaskets will confuse, and I would ask for all the old parts, that way you know the new stuff has been fitted, Rick
