had to take my 2.4 terano on a long round trip (around 700 miles)
before the trip, after an hours drive the engine used to make a fan belt sound that didnt change in pitch.

since the long run, its intensified, on first fire up, theres a clattery rattle which then vanishes, and then the fan belt noise is there from start to finish.

worried as before engine used to be a silent runner, but its getting worse and i dont think its fan belt as would be changing pitch and tempo with engine speed?

any advice would be welcomed.

no the noise dosnt change no matter the revs.
once warmed up the temperature dosnt go above normal,

your rattle is probably timing chain tensioner foofed, the other noise could well be the viscous fan seized and running all the time, Rick

yes if you get the bits from UK but I have found a US place that supplies the whole lot including a water pump and import duty for around £200 from Nissan you are looking over £450 and as for the viscous fan I have one I think but will have to go looking sometime, but we do not know it is your viscous it could be a belt tensioner pulley bearing, and if your miles are around 120,000 the rattle could be big end shells, do not worry these engines will run for thousands of miles after they start rattling, shells around £50 but to get the sump off the front diff has to come off but well worth doing and sump needs loosening anyway for the timing chain stuff, so makes sense to do the whole lot together then you will have a cracking engine, Rick

thanks rick,

done about 94000 miles now. i tend to listen to the engine so the rattles and whines are clear as day to me, esp with window shut.
if its ok to drive for the moment then thats a relief, ive limited it to short radius journeys as want to preserve the engine. if it comes to ordering from US to get it sorted then so be it. shes not the most torquey gazelle like 2.4i but a nice machine that im trying to get sorted and hopefully offroad sometime, just not familiar with the engine at all.

at that mileage it should not be too bad, the early timing tensioner was all plastic and it ends up in the sump and chain slops so much it hits timing case and wears into water way, not good, a good indicator of early or later is what type of distributor have you got? if if only 4 spark leads then later type, if 5 wires = early, but of course we do not know if it has been moded, Rick

before i had it didnt look like it had been modded at all, totally basic.
4 spark leads.
tboth belts have roughtly same finger tension although the front one is visibly moving left to righ slightly.
fan turns from the moment the engine fires and i noticed that the tips of the fan facing the engine have black clumps of plastic on them. i span the fan by hand but couldnt see it catching anything?

the blades will deflect forward when spinning so could be touching cowling at speed, you have the later model so chances are you have the metal chain slider with plastic facing which is rubbish and will be in the sump, but the metal bit stops the chain hitting the waterway, it only rattles till the hydraulic tensioner comes into play, if you want details of the stuff from the US just let me know, you get absolutely everything for a remarcable price, Rick

i probably will need those parts if not something else so would appreciate the deails thanks.

noticed the rattle is now there everytime i rev and the idle drops.

had another look and the waterpump seems to be out of alignment, the belt is at an angle so not sure if thats a prob or not.

you should not have any rattle once the oil pressure is up, are you sure it is from the timing case area and not the gearbox, they can rattle at idle, Rick

might be his teeth rattling in the cold rick :augie:lol

teeth are not rattling but hard to feel my fingers lol.

no dont think its gearbox, not a continual rattle, just as the revs get to idle speed then stops. how best to discribe.....rev - "vrummm", rev drop and just as it stops - "grrr"

sorry, the cold and wind has now frozen my brain!

Look on Ebay for Mizumo Auto the kit is listed under 240SX pick up truck KA24E engine not the one with two chains that is the double OH cam, they offer several options some including the water pump others not, I had the one including at $180 yes about £117 including delivery, but there is import duty to pay, the chain alone from nissan is £85, Rick

will do thanks,
i know all about import duty - ordered a digi dash to convert my probe, paid the $100 postage, then customs slapped an extra $120 on it - and as the wires didnt come with it its still in a box!!

ebay u.s i presume?

foubnd it, slighly confusing, couldnt see the specific one you mentioned but found 3 possible options:

waterpump on its own: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-2-...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53e4d00711

timing chain with water pump (or oil pump also :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/89-97-2-4...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cbf8c52f0

engine rebuild: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Nissan-Pi...r_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cb2998dea

i figure if its any of the aforementioned probs...apart from viscous coupling?..that the kit would cover it?

With engine stationary, try the fan for rock (there should be very little or none, & turn it to see if it is possibly touching anything. My viscous coupling was actually breaking up to the point of disintegration (previous ignored crash damage) & tapping on the aircon pulley! It made no noticeable noise during normal use though. Changed it to electric as it was £100 cheaper & a lot less trouble (pump/vc assy. is one unit on mine but separate on yours).
I also agree with others: the timing chain tensioner could be shot.
Best of luck.
