Engine dies while reversing with caravan on!?!

Hi all! Firstly thanks for all the excellent advice I've had from reading everyone's posts over the years, having 2 Terranos between me and the missus saved me a packet. However I'm stumped on this one and looking for wisdom......my neighbour returned today from a weekend away with his van as he often does. However this time everytime he tried to reverse his terrano with the van on the engine "chugged"(his words) lost power, died/stalled. Without the load of the caravan it reverses fine and tows the van as normal? Any ideas where to start looking or has anyone had anything similar

Could your mate be bit of a plum and have the reverse/brake lever thing off:augie
Not big on tintents but my boat trailers have a lever to allow reversing and dissable the brakes:augie

as you reverse the caravan , wont it push the hydraulics thereby applying the brakes ?

Yer, but they have an overun so with a certain amount of pressure automatically disengage the brakes.

I'd say though if its only with the caravan on it could be something to do with that... maybe his dampner on the caravan? :nenau
If I was him I would find a nice steep hill, point the motor downhill then see if it'll reverse up it just on tick over... that should eliminate the car being at fault? :thumb2

Modern trailer and caravan brakes are auto reverse they disengage when you reverse have to be like that by law now

Sounds to me like the power socket to the van got a short shutting engine management down, seems to instant for much else, Rick

to me sould like the auto reverse on the caravan wont release as others have said with my caravan u have to fully stop then reverse slowly at first to disengauge the caravan breaks my caravan is a 2004 baileys ranger if that helps

Auto reverse brakes simply do not work in reverse, I have them on my car trailer, but even if they did work stopping the engine na most people will simply slip the clutch to keep going, Rick

i think this problem came up awhile back, and a member said a spring or something that wears and can be changed, cant remember who it was now, :doh:augie

Good point, I was being kind :lol
If I reverse my "old skool" braked trailer without lifting the reverse thing, then the truck just rams the trailer back with the wheels solid Bit of a sod to steer then though:doh

Thanks for all your replys, just been round to tell him only to be told that the problem is getting worse and now it "conks" out reversing up a slight incline without any load i.e. the caravan. Would it be possible that the fuel/diesel pump is on the way out?? And if so would it show a fault code if I use the paperclip trick?
