If I remember correctly there are 2 different types fitted on the terrano, came across this when I replaced mine last year.

:nenau i think its the plug that may be different.i bought brand new from Nissan so didn't have the hassle of checking part numbers.
I will have a look at the old one I took off:thumb2

Hi there,

finally I managed to change the ignition switch but the problem is still there.

The engine randomly cuts off. I have noticed while driving that the rev counter is playing. It goes fine and suddenly drops down a bit and goes back up.
The car restarts fine, but becoming annoying to do over 5 times in 5 miles trip.

I would be very grateful for your advices please?

did you replace with a new ignition switch?

dos it ever cut out when cold?

when does it cut out, randomly when driving along a normal straight road, or often when coming up to a junction...

when it cuts out, is the engine warm/hot?

have you checked the earth strap under the coolant bottle, from there to the engine block? Youll have to lift out the coolant bottle.

did you chck the CPS? hence my questions above - sounds so much like CPS to me.

Probably NOT CPS...

Once the engine is running if the CPS fails, the engine will still keep running fine. I believe it picks up a default signal from somewhere else. If, however the CPS fails/is faulty will the engine is off, it won't start.

indeed. if the cps is faulty, then during running when the engine is hot, the car will run erratic and stall. This is because the CPS is just a magnet and the heat from the engine affects the effectiveness of that magnet. So it can be on its way out, and cause stalling, and when it does run, the ECU reverts to defaults reverts to cps, back to defaults hence the erratic running, so its well worth considering it as a possibility.:thumbs

I've found that generally, with these cars, the CPK/CPS tend to begin failing at around 116k miles, that just based on the posts here from failures - very common mileages.:bow

Hi,
I have replaced only the barel on the picture .
It doesn't make any difference to engine if cold or hot.
Yes, it does it more often when coming to a junction.
I will check the earth strap bellow the coolant bottle.

I know it sounds stupid but what is CPS?

THANKS I really appreciate your support.

crankshaft position sensor :thumb2

the cps is important for the smooth running of your engine, if it fails completely the engine will not fire up.
when mine was playing up if i was doing normal speed, 30mph plus the engine would would choke & rev gauge would drop & pick up, because the revs were up the engine usually recovered, but if the cps played up when you are coming to a stop, no revs so engine will stall.

I'm suspecting the CPS, its so common on older vehicles now. First port of call is clean it, that may improve things but it may be failing.

I know this may be way off, but certainly worth investigating as its reasonably easy to get to if its at the front or back of the engine.

Hello,

Just have noticed that the engine did cut off by turning right few times on my way from work as I have to go through fe roundabouts and right turns.

It may be worth while, buying a can of electrical spray cleaner and giving all the electrical plugs a good spray to see if this helps:thumb2

get that CKP sensor out and clean it. Maybe even test it.

Hi,

a quick update on my problem.

As Clivvy suggested to clean earth strap under the coolant bottle I have done it and since then the car is running well. I have only done around 40 miles so will see later. Big thanks Clivvy.:thumb2

Season's Greetings to you all from beautiful New Zealand...

I followed this entire thread to understand the issues PAPIN was facing as it sounds familiar to the problem I am facing currently with my Nissan Terrano 2000 3.0L DDTi with ZD30 engine.

The SUV runs for a while (30 minutes) on the motorway and then hesitates, and finally stalls with check engine light coming on. I took it to the mechanic and they plugged in the computer the next day, and found nothing as the check engine light did not come on while checking.

Over a period of last 2.5 years I have had many repairs done on it:

1. Glow plugs replaced
2. Fuel filter replaced
3. Fuel injectors checked
4. Starter motor replaced
5. Serviced Zexel Pump at a Bosch Diesel Specialist
6. Radiator replaced
7. New timing chain
8. Cylinder head replaced
9. Water pump and thermostat replaced
10. New Mass Air-flow Sensor replaced 2 weeks ago (black smoke prior to replacement)

I am at my wits-end with the latest issue of stalling and engine cut-off while driving. I will appreciate any suggestions. Thanks, Saeed
