Disaster has struck I'm on holiday with caravan tomorrow going abroad and torsion bar just snapped under terrano! Got a ferry to catch at 10.30 from Dover

Hope you get it sorted, can't help, as too far away.

There is a good tutorial on how to change them on here, main issue seems to be getting the old ones out, if they are rusty..

If the ones you are picking up, are second hand, make sure you know which side is left, and right, when you pick up the replacements, as swapping left to right is a very quick way to kill the second set.

They are actually marked left and right but you can still get them wrong as they can be turned round 180 degrees so its important to know which way they came off.

Emergency (continued)

Right so far so good

Got torsion bar from 1st Nissan in Welshpool,(interesting drive on gas shockers and bump stops, with one torsion bar knackered!) . He knows all about em and keeps em attached to rear crossmember till you need em so that you get the correct side and its facing the rightway around so to speak.
Thanks for help so far now for the graft.
Ill look at the download before I wade in ....one thing I didn't know was that there are two sizes of torsion bar depending on the age of the truck... something to watch out for
Keep you posted as to progress
Keep the help coming.....:thumbs

Good job your bump stops where there i found out couple of weeks ago that if your bumpstops are missing and the torsion bar fails you will loose your steering

common trap to fall into, it makes no difference, front to rear, rear to front the shaft itself is still twisting the same, side to side is the one, Rick

Failed at the last hurdle!

Well I've been stuffed!
got under car and mauled my roe off undoing torsion bar adjuster nuts skinned my knuckles etc but did it eventually.
rear piece of bar was not too bad it came out quite easily, but front piece was a pig had to heat it up grind a groove in it and belt it out with precision lump hammer!
Got it out in the end though and felt quite chuffed until I matched em up on garden table only to find replacement is too short!!!!!!
Old on is 1230mm new one is 1215mm NOOOO...
Any one in Stoke got an offside 1230mm torsion bar lying around?
If not I'm off to Welshpool again at crack of dawn:(

Thats odd thought they were all same for reference what is the diameter.

very odd as I used a LWB bar on my SWB off road motor went straight in, so not aware of any difference in length, are you sure you are you are matching the broke bar right? Rick

Yes, very odd

All r20 and wd21 have the same torsion bars

he has a 2003 3 ltr motor so could be that they are a little longer, but only by 15 mm so if he puts washers about 7 mm each end he can get away with it for his holls, and change it after, Rick

Are you sure the old one hasn't twisted a bit AND stretched before it failed ?
Just a thought. Measure the other side and see what you have.
Good luck :thumb2

Measured otherside...

Well otherside is same length as busted one.. that is to say 1230mm
Its 15mm longer than its replacement.
don't forget its a 3.0 litre 2003 late model could this have anything to do with difference in length?
Guy at 1st Nissan did say that there was two sizes depending on year but it would appear that he got his years mixed up?

Ah bugger didn't spot that :doh Sorry mate can't think of anything helpfull, except good luck :thumbs

did you get it fixed?
im in stoke but im no mechanic. may be able point you in the right direction though
