Hi all

I was wondering if anyone could offer any advice as to what could be wrong with my electric windows. Basically they just stopped working.
Fortunately (or not!) they were closed when they decided to pack up working but as I was away on holiday there wasn't a lot I could do but drive around in a mobile greenhouse. It was typical it would happen in the only week we got some hot weather!!

I did manage to take a quick look and from my understanding they have a 30A fuse in the electrical box in the engine compartment together with a relay. I'm thinking that as the fuse is fine and neither window works then it could be the relay??

I noticed that the relay had a different serial number to all the others so I didn't try to swap it with another to see if it worked in cae I ended up with two dead relays.

Anyway I'm probably wrong about the relay. Before I go buy another I'd really appreciate any help or ideas as to what could be the problem.

It's a 98 terrano II 2.4i SWB

cheers Colin

Looking at the wiring diagram there is also a circuit breaker between the fuse and the relay.
I would pull the relay and with a volt meter or test lamp, test to see if you have power at the pins of the relay connection , there should be four pins one will be live all the time from the batter another should be live when the ignition is turned on.

Thanks very much for posting that info Jeremy. I didn't know anything about the circuit breaker being there. I've just checked it now and there is power to the pins as you described so maybe it is the relay after all. I'm going to give it a try anyway. Thanks again for your help.

Sorry, don't mean to hijack your thread, but I also have a problem with my windows, it all seems related to the switch on centre consul, i think it is the window lock switch? if not working, i press rapidly three or four times, it then works! so question is, is this a switch problem or a relay problem?

The wiring on the centre console does not affect the driver's window, last week I removed the centre console to adjust the handbrake, and the drivers window still worked with the switch on the door.
This might help to locate the problem !

Cheers Rustic, the strange thing is that at times the only window working is the drivers, and the rest are either shut or stuck in open position, so does this suggest a relay or that window locking switch? i've had a trawl through the forum and can't really see if this is a common problem on the Terrano!

Thanks again.

Sounds like the switch to me, or one of 2 connectors under the console, the console is held in by 4 screws, 2 under a small cover at the front, and 2 in the box with the lid. The connectors are at the back and there is a catch at the side to release them.
It could be the switch or the pin/socket may be pushed back in the housing causing an intermittent connection. Try pushing each wire from the back into the connector, then try the switches etc.
Hope this helps, regards, Rustic

Rustic, thanks again, I will give this a go and hopefully resolve problem.

cheers
