Mav been using a fair bit more fuel lately so had a look at download for blanking off the egr valve. My Mav is a 2.7TD 1995 Model but the EGR valve seems to be at the side of the turbo and not under the air filter. Is it still the same to blank it off as it deffinately is stuck open and does it have to be closed for this to be effective?
Cheers Rich

the valve may be under the turbo, the solenoid is under the air filter i believe, at leats thats where it is on mine! in fact, my egr valve is at the back of the block!! mines a TDi though, but with egr. you could try blocking off the solenoid end first perhaps? A little trick i used, you know those tiny silver shelf holders you get with Ikea and Argos furniture? like a little silver tube with a stop in the middle? they fit the EGR pipe really nice, so rather than using a ball bearing, i stuck on of them between two peices of pipe, making it a quick fix if i need to revert back to normal. I did this because i havent blanked off the egr itself yet...

good luck!

Thanks Clivvy, do you know if the valve is open or closed when the little piston is out as mine is stuck out and doesnt move when throttle is applied. If i blank off the solenoid does that make the valve totally disfunctional? I have located the pipe easy enough but I would like to makesure I'm not gonna mess anything up!! Changing fuel filter aswell even though it was only done just over 2000 miles ago.
Cheers Rich

The EGR valve is at the back of the inlet manifold with a pipe that runs round the back of the engine to the exhaust manifold, the device on the turbo is the over pressure dump valve, Rick

i thought that was right Rick, wasnt sure with the older ones (placement of egr valve)

ideally, you'd blank off the egr valve side if it is sticking OPEN, i believe, otherwise you can just do the solenoid end. I did just the solenoid end ages ago, and nothing has gone wrong yet (although I still need to check the egr)

Just remove it or blank it off :thumbs

Due to the pipe snaping that "Rick" has mentioned above.
I removed the egr valve & put a home made plate over it.
Then cut the pipe off the manifold & welded a bolt in it to plug it.

:thumbs

A tin plate blanking the actual gas passage is the best solution, as even with the vaccum source blocked the valve could still leak.

For those who wish to know, the EGR is opened at idle, shut at cruise and then re-opened under full power.
