I have just replaced all four of mine on a 2002 3.0 Di.
Paid 26 quid each for NGK CZ71 with ceramic tips, I'll see how long they last.....

There is an NGK all metal alternative, although I don't know if these are any improvement over the ceramic tipped version.

The NGK part number for the all metal version is: Y-522J

First of all, you are paying too much for your glow plugs.:eek: (Edit see note below)..

How long are your glow plugs on for at the start? 5- 10 seconds?
On the 2.7TD they also remain on for a certain time at reduced power, controlled by a sensor on the thermostat housing, a relay and a series resistor to limit the current.
It could be that the sensor has failed and the glow plugs are staying on too long.
Ok this applies to my 2.7 TD, so yours could be different.

What I would do is wire a low wattage bulb to the glow plugs, ( or a 12 volt multimeter on volts range).
Monitor the brightness of the bulb (voltage) it should be at battery volts for 10 seconds say.... start the vehicle, then the bulb will dim, ( Voltage will drop) for a period of time ........unknown.... never actually done this test but this is how the 2.7TD works.
Hope this helps.
Best regards, Rustic

Edit:.... I just looked at the prices for these glow plugs on ebay, wow they are expensive..... WHY ? Are they made from gold, platinum and silver ?
I like the NGK, they last longer than other brands on the Mav 2.7TD.....

I should have connected a lead and lamp to the glow plug feed last time I replaced two burnt out. Have to take the intercooler off etc and it was during the cold spell also I should have run the engine for a while to make it warmer to work on. I was hoping somebody had a definitive solution. The glow plugs are about four times longer than normal so they must cost four times as much as normal. They are steel tipped not ceramic but the steel is not damaged.

Just been and checked mine:
IGN on, glow plugs heat for around 6 secs. then switch off.
Start engine and glow plugs switch back on again and remain on until engine coolant > ~40 deg C.

Measured nominal current for 4 plugs at 36 amps.

Found the lead that supplies glow plugs and it stays on until the engine gets warm, then switches off. I was convinced it was on all the time. So it must be down to the quality of the glow plugs. I,ve only had the car two years next January, three glow plugs were dead when I bought it so I replaced all 4 from partco, then last winter again three had gone and I think I got them from milner, now as I said two more had gone replaced them with the two old spares that I had from before. I know I will have to buy new ones soon.
Strange nobody else with the Z80 engine don't have a problem.

Shouldn't be paying more than a tenner each for glow plugs

Even Milners do em for about £8.!

&

Are you running on just diesel ? WVO ? SVO ?

8.00 is for the 2.7 eng. They want 13.00 for the ZD30, and no mention of make!

Diesel only.

Just realised its for a 3ltr :doh so its not a bad price :thumbs

Well to burn the plugs i would of said the fuel is burning at a higher temp to diesel...

Had a thought... as the glows are switched on until engine coolant temp reaches > ~ 40 deg. C if you had a dodgy thermostat the glows would be on MUCH longer, so do check they switch off after a few mins.
I would guess it these guys:

Running normal diesel. Checked and they do switch off. It does have a lack of power problem though so might be running hot. MIL light not on but blink code 0406 INT AIR VOL present. Have been around most things new Bosch mass air flo sensor, boost pressure ok, turbo ok, no leaks, blanked off egr no differance and removed. Posted on this forum.
Had it in a Nissan garage, it was the South of France to be fair and their consult machine did'nt find 0406. Would partially blocked cat cause high burning temperature? I would think it would cause lack of power. No air in diesel to pump, had a clear pipe in line, replaced fuel filter, air filter. I've more or less given up. Had a laptop on the OBD connector everything sems ok. No filter at pump on this engine.
