Changing shoes in rear drum brakes is not to bad a job. Even did that job myself with a bit of experienced assistance. The workshop manual is very helpful because it gives handy pictures of the inside of the drum. Helps when you can't remember which sping you took out of where and what way it was facing. A link for the manual is posted on this site on a lot of threads. Zippy656 is the man with the link and as sure as manual is mentioned he is bound to turn up.

already found the manual, this is the best place on the internet! :D still abit scared of doing it tho so just wondered if there was anything i should know.
Thanks, Nick

Nick, when started at mine I found out that the one of the cylinders was shot. One piston on one side was seized and other piston on same wheel was leaking at the seal. Had to get a new cylinder and fit it. Straight forward enough job. But did mean the brakes had to be bled. Might suggest you watch out for pushing on the pistons too much when the shoes are off as you don't want to push the pistons out of the cylinder altoghether and have to go putting them back together. I did have to take the hub off a second time and slack off the adjustment as the brakes felt a bit heavy.

freebird, take a picture with your phone if you can, makes life a lot easier mate, when refitting shoes and springs, :thumbs

Thanks alot guys, ill tell you how it goes after the weekend, think im gunna have ago
Thanks, Nick

Am I right in thinking there are 2 types (sizes) of brake shoes used on the Terrano/Maverick depending on the year of build?

Hi Nick

I've had my rear drums off a couple of times recently and found that the best way to remove them is to use two bolts/screws in the threaded holes in the drum to 'push' them off. I think there is a tip on this in the workshop download.
When you get them off and before you dismantle the shoes just lift the rubber 'glove' at each side of the hydraulic cylinder to see if there is any fluid in it. If there is, it means you need to replace either the whole cylinder and piston assembly or just the piston seals, whatever your budget will run to.
If you don't have to dismantle the hydraulic wheel cylinder it is a good idea to temporarily secure the pistons by using thin wire to hold them in place when you remove the brake shoes. That way you won't loose fluid if they come out of the cylinder under gravity pressure of the fluid in the system.

Whiler you're at it check the operation of the handbrake cable and that it slides in the housing easily. They frequently sieze where secured to chassis and cause the brakes to overheat.

Regards CL

I am glad that you posted this because I am considering having a go at overhauling my brakes. Front and Rear, but dealing with the hydraulic system makes me a bit nervous, especially the front calipers with their stick slide pins and weak bleed nipples.

Good luck with the job and it'd be great if you could report back with any pitfalls once done.

I can remember doing them on a Pug 205 once and it was a nightmare getting the hub off because a wear lip had formed inside of it.

Regards

Alan

Thanks for all that CL i really really hope it doesnt get that complicated for me otherwise i can see myself panicing and crying like a baby lol and yes Alan i will get back on once its done and tell you how it goes.
Thanks, Nick

Well, i couldnt get hold of the shoes in time, there special order at sutton auto factors apparently, but i did manage to change front pads and front anti-roll bar links which was pretty easy :)

Right, today i took the wheels off and had a look in the drum, the shoes were almost as good as the brand new ones! still have a problem with the ABS light :( anyone have any ideas? and wires known to break? how do you check sensors are working?
Thanks, Nick

nsf sensor wire is the most prone for breaking.
i repaired mine and it sorted the abs out.
there should be some old posts about it if you have a search.
