Drop Kerbs

Hi,
our council is replacing local road and pavement surfaces.

They've written to say I can apply for a drop kerb and their
contractor will do it as part of renewal work.

Normally it costs £60 to apply for DK, then telephone number
prices for their authorised road workers to charge me for pleasure.

So wondering what its going to cost do one on basis that they
will be putting in new road, kerb and pavements anyway.

Our pavement is about 5 feet deep, and would be 8 feet wide for
car I guess, gather normally can be around £500 so any guesses
for them to do it now. I havent yet applied.

Had mine widened last year £100 per meter run 2 metres total cost £200

It is now 4 metres wide, makes getting in and out with our narrow streets easy now

sometimes council will redo all the kerbs and pavements on a road and offer to drop the kerb for residents usuallly for a decent price as they are ripping it all up anyway. My mate got his done for 60 notes when they did his road.

I reckon it's a rip off.If they want to put new road down then fine but why do you have to pay ? I thought that's what council tax is for :augie

so no one can park in front of your house / block the drive. My mate just had a bit of fencing and a front grassy bit for a makeshift drive. parking was always a nightmare, everyone had 2 motors. not any more.

thats my point, if i was doing it would have to get my own council approved builder
and pay council for 'licence' / 'plannig permission' and then builder.

if council are replacing it all anyway, should be free maybe just pay for auth/survey.

will ring em monday, suspect will have to have a drive in place so cant be accused
of dragging mud from garden onto pavement and road.

They are offering a drop kerb at a reduced rate if you want one, some houses have parking on the front area, but don't have a drop kerb line to access it.

It would cost a hell of a lot more to do if you did it from scratch.
I would take up the offer if I didn't have a drop kerb, but I do.

Councils oversee the work,but it is done by the highways department.Simply because it is them that have access to all/any pipes cables etc.That may be lurking underneath the ground.

id say go for it, it will save a lot of cash/ hassle in the future and will up the worth of your house if you have off street parking, as well as lower your car insurance:clap:clap. at my last house i made a concrete ramp to get my bike up and down without damaging the fairing, people complained (nosey bastard neighbours) and a guy from the council came and said i had to remove it and pay them £400 to put a drop kurb in, i passed and usede a rem ovable wooden ramp instead.( the neighbours loved that:naughty

70 quid here just to see if you can have one, then about a grand to install.....

I know this is of no relevance in this instance ,But in France there is no charge for planning permission you just send in the relevant form forms and you get it back in two months ,yes or no or yes if you change this and that !
They have been doing the road outside my house for the past three weeks and I wanted them to lower my curb, so i went down to the marie and asked if they could do it ,No probs ! and sure enough when they got to my house they dropped it,NO CHARGE

There are far too many cars parked on road causing congestion, so it should be in the councils interest to encourage home owners to get their car off the road.
Try this theory with the council, they might well go for it, with a bit of charm.:naughty

So in my opinion, this work should be done free of charge, provided that there is space on the householder's property to park at least one car, preferably two.

Many years ago, when pavements used paving slabs, my Dad went out and dropped the kerb himself, but in those days the kerb stones and paving slabs were compacted onto sand.

I was too young at the time to understand if this was OK with the local council or if he obtained any permission or not, he just got on with it. When complete, it looked like it had always been there.

But these days with public liability, risk assessment, pedestrian control, traffic control and signage, and of course prior warning to all concerned, it's no wonder it costs a fortune.

But if they are there anyway replacing the pavement surface, then there is only the kerb stones to drop, with at worst a couple of profiled kerb stones.

I would have thought a couple of hundred towards the councils coffers would be acceptable, or a BIG drink to a couple of the workers....:augie:augie

Good luck, but when complete will certainly make your property more saleable with off street parking, and this will be reflected in the house value, which will be greater. You will certainly get your money back.:thumb2. eventually...:doh

Most persons round my way have the dropped kerb to reserve the space outside their house, rarely park off road, very selfish but if you have 2 grand to spare it saves walking miles home after finding a space to park at night
