Has your photo licence expired ?

As I have not moved house since 1984 I still have my green paper only driving licence that is valid until my 70th birthday.

I am amazed at how many people do not realise that the Photo Licences are not issued on the same basis but have a shorter expiry date. Methinks its 10 years ?

yep I still have my paper licence, always regarded the photocard one as a back door identity card which I vowed I would never have, Rick

My wife and I still have the old green paper copy, no on going charges.:thumb2

Now looking back, my original provisional licence was a red booklet, see pic below, taken from internet..
Pages were stuck into it, with driving entitlements etc.

My understanding is that the 10 year renewal is so that the photo is up to date, as far as I'm aware my licence is still valid until I'm 70 (and automatically renewed up to this point) and that's when I'll have to be retested or provide medical certificates (or whatever it is that has to be done).

Ah, but, as it stands today, if your photo part is out of date OR you no longer look like your pic, then your entitlement to drive is rescinded.
Both parts must be valid to be able to drive legally . All sorts of insurance issues too.

Once I had lived in France for Three years I had to change my uk licence for a French one, this thread has just prompted me to check out the procedure of changing it back when I come home hopefully later this year. I was worried that I may lose some of the categories i had on my original licence, espetialy the towing restrictions.
Any way I rang them this morning and I will get my licence back the same as it was when I left the uk. :thumb2
The French licence is worse than the old uk paper licence, and you have to have it with you at all times. Ho, and it dosn't help when it's been in the washer a few times :doh

Gotcha, I'd fogotten how involved the govt had become in order to protect us from ourselves. I assume it's for our own good and nothing to do with the govts need to monitor our movements for security purposes.... Oh no...

I've had so many points over the years that my paper one is always in good nick. Albeit with a lot more ink on it :lol

DVLA sell your info all over the shop already. Ins companies will I'm sure already have access to your details. Non declared points = invalid policy.
They can check but don't as that way they can wriggle out of claims while still taking your money. So fess up or pay up

The link above has a link that shows all your details on-line with the the only requirement being licence number, NI number and postcode.
What info do we put on our insurance applications?

It asks for national insurance details, I didn't realise that this was linked to either my address or licence?

From 8 June 2015 penalty points (endorsements) will no longer be shown on driving licence. This information will be held on DVLA’s driver record, and can be checked online, by phone or post.

Nope if its a photo licence that has not had a picture renewal it has all expired after 10 years the expiry date will be 10 years after its issue otherwise.

To renew online, you need:
a valid UK passport
to be a resident of Great Britain - there’s a different service in Northern Ireland
to pay £14 by MasterCard, Visa, Electron, Maestro or Delta debit or credit card (there’s no fee if you’re over 70 or have a medical short period licence)
addresses of where you’ve lived over the last 3 years
your current driving licence, including the paper counterpart if you have a photocard licence (if you don’t have your licence you must say why in your application)
your National Insurance number
to not be disqualified from driving

but what if you haven't got a passport ( like me ) ?
