Had a look at alternator and PAS drive belts yesterday---tension has not changed over many weeks but alt belt looked low in pulley so decided to change both.
Was I glad I had bothered. The alternator belt LOOKED ok from a "perfunctary butchers" but it was a much different tale when removed and turned inside-out. Just hanging in there by a few threads in many places. 8O
Must confess I've had the waggon nearly two years and never changed them before.

All sounds quieter under the bonnet now too

This is when they are under the most load, lights on, rear screen, wipers, heater etc, maybe soon after you have started the engine from cold when the battery is taking a charge as well.
I carry a spare as they are both the same on my 2.7TD, keep it next to the jack in the boot area so it won't get damaged.
At least the water pump should still work in the event of either one breaking, problem with the diesel, you loose the brake boost as the vacumm pump is on the back of the alternator.
But at least you can probably find somewhere safe to stop when it goes.
In all the years of driving, I have never had one break, but you do need to check them every 2-3 months, and replace as necessary.
