Britain first adopted William Willett's Daylight Saving Time scheme in 1916, a few weeks after Germany. For years, the British Government had refused to introduce Daylight Saving Time, but by then, Britain and Germany were fighting each other in the First World War (1914-18), and any system that could save fuel and money was worth trying. The Summer Time Act of 1916 was quickly passed by Parliament and the first day of British Summer Time, 21 May 1916, was widely reported in the press.

Clocks and watches were very different from those we use today. Many clocks could not have their hands turned backwards without breaking the mechanism. Instead, owners had to put the clock forward by 11 hours when Summer Time came to an end. The Home Office put out special posters telling people how to reset their clocks to GMT, and national newspapers also gave advice.

I keep hearing about this thing called the sun but what does it look like:augie:lol an extra hour in bed without getting moaned at is fine by me just hate it when the clocks go forwards:doh

Nah sorry mate that's tosh. I live in the sticks and the farm across the road is up chasing cows at 6am and still doing it at 11pm . Makes no odds which way round the clock is tractors have head lights these days :lol
I just thinkthe whole nonesense is old hat bollox and just wastes time and money . Oh and I hate dark evenings

After the wars it has been kept up for the farmers I believe so it's not as dark when they start more so the ones with herds of animals

But that seems to last for a few weeks then it's back to being dark in the early morning as the daylight hours get shorter.
Waste of time.

ok , so who forgot to turn their clocks back 1 hour last night ? :augie

I wish they would leave it as it was, less than 2 months and we are heading in the right direction again.

I always feel peeved about June 21 being longest day etc. I always think.......it`s downhill from here with days getting a little bit shorter (15 minutes/week+-) just when in the Summer you want as much time outside as possible.
From now on as well it stuffs up a working day when it is dimsy at 4 o`clock........:doh

I think we're all on the same page here boys :doh

I wish they would do away with it but on the same hand I think there's something quite romantic about the nostalgia behind it :D
