its just a trickle that runs from near the side of the water pump on the face of the block could it also be a crack in the block (just fearing the worst )or is that not possible ?

probably the pump, quite a common problem on these. Did mine earlier in the year and not too bad a job (work or cost wise). If you are loosing water then there may well be an air lock in the cooling system causing the high reading? Also worth checking the connections for the heater where they join the block by the thermostat housing as I have had a small leak there and it runs around the pump body and off the bottom of the pump, looks like a leaking pump:thumbs

thanks thats what i was hoping ,rather than me thinking im going mad ,ive looked from the top thougha nd doesnt seem to be any leakage anywhere near the thermo housing defo from the bottom but running down the side of the water pump just cant seem to see where the top of the leak leads to had the sump guard off and still cant see, but the guage was going very high today and then do 60 down motorway cools it down again for ashort while:doh

Almost certainly the pump - not difficult to replace and you should swap all your belts while its off as well. Saves another PITA job later.

The leak will be very small indeed, it always is, and as you surmise, you often need to remove the sump guard to even see its there.

Highly unlikely to be a cracked block - these engines are extremely robust unless seriously abused with overheating etc.. left unattended.....

Do the water pump as soon as poss, over heating can cause lots and lots of problems.
Mine was abused before I got it and i ended up changing the engine in the end only to find that the new one had also been abused. So i had to get another cylinder head for that one.
Luckily Rick and swifty were only an hour and a half drive away.
Them boys know their stuff!!!!
That's why the mav is back with them being sorted out for the mot
