Do I need a winch?

Well as i now seriously want to do some greenlaning and what not, would I be wise to buy a winch, also what are the opinions on these snorkels i seem to see on other 4x4's?

Well for green lanes a winch is not essential but always handy:thumbs
Since I put mine on there's many situations it's been useful for
Snorkels are a bit of a pain due to the stupid prices wanted for genuine T2 ones, and I think they're ugly:doh
You can make your own easily just do a search on here or look at my pics for some ideas:sly
Again for green lanes a snorkel is a bonus but not essential unless you're going looking for bonnet deep crossings

If you do go for a winch, dont skimp on it. There's nothing worse than thinking you've got a failsafe bit of kit and then it burns out on the first pull:lol
Also you'll need to get a winch bumper for it:sly

That's a silly question, of course you want a winch just like the rest of us. You don't need one though and you have to mess about at the front to fit it and watch your insurance company rub their hands as they empty another chunk out of your bank account.
Again you don't need a Snorkle unless your going to be serious off roading. I think they look cool especially the Safari brand. Again watch the insurance company ask for more!!!

Your money is better spent on a good service and fluids changed. A good set of tyres, even a second set of wheel rims so you have road tyres and laning tyres.

Whilst i have managed to flood out a petrol landrover, Ive also used them solo and to tow trailers all over the place (the standard mod type and the old "fish fryers")).

Never needed more than a second vehicle, a tow rope and on a couple of occasions a tow point mounted mechanical winch which was a bonus for taking up the slack.

Personally unless youre heading towards something like pete gets up to, looking to get stuck :naughty id spend the money elsewhere

id look a ful set of shackles, straps. saw, spade, axe etc.

then waffle boards. mud tyres and so on, winch is sexy
but expensiive vs amount of use. frankly if lane is that
tough questions if should be on it for damage to lane
and vehicle.

if did get one, oh and after got hilift jack or air bag jack too
then look at portable versions so can use at back or front
and store away when not needed so no insurance hit.

It's a 2000lb winch not 6000 as he's trying to make out:doh
For anything near good enough for the truck you'll need to spend £200 min
IF you're lucky:naughty
Do as others have said first, esp the shackles straps and boards, then tyres , lift , some mates and some "Start ya Bastard" spray:sly(much cheaper than a snorkel)
Beware hilift jack you need to be very careful using those things and really need your truck modded to take the foot properly

I htink Jim is pretty spot on, if you look on utube for footage of t2's of road thare is some great footage of deep water stuff with no snorkel. I've been up to the bottom of the windscreen no trouble.

decenet tyres and your away add more as you feel you need more.

Like Jim said you may never need one but you definatley want one!

I had this recently on a previously flat lane that had been well chewed up by a large transformer type bit of forestry comission equipment that left us well and truly stuck!!

Previously shallow fords have been up over the bonnet of my troll causing some severe A55 twitching and flooding a headlight.. Home made snorkel is doing the trick this weekend!!!

Oh and a winch fairlead is cheaper than front parking sensors and a lot less anoying:thumb2

forget the winch, go for some good tyres, the T2 has the advantage of the rear diff over the landrover anyway........... and the fact that you can lock both shafts together overcomes the centre diff problems with the green oval altogether.
Good service, keep the undergear clean, new bushes (OEM over polybush anyday) and a set of rock sliders.......... sorted!!!
