GOING TO MAKE MY ON SNORKAL FOR T2 2.7TDI DUE TO CLOSE CALL IN VERY DEEP PUDDLE??? GOT SOME TUBE FROM B+Q AND WAS GOIN TO REMOVE AIR FILTER BOX AND PLUMB STRAIGHT IN AND PUT FILLTER ON TOP OF SNORKAL. THE TUBE IS 43MM DIAMETER WILL THIS BE BIG ENOUGH?

Too small mate you'll need at least 63mm upwards

Blimey. How deep was the puddle?! I've been through some really deep water for something without a snorkel and haven't managed to soggy the air filter yet. I've even had water splash over the bonnet with no ill effects. I am starting to think a snorkel might be a good idea though - I can't have been far off discovering what level is too high...

Do diesels still hydro-lock, like a petrol engine and do serious damage, or it is just water where it should not be, all stop, and then lots of work cleaning out bits?

basically , water does not compress , unlike diesel for example , so if water gets into the combustion chamber , it will find the weak point in it ... normally valves/con rods etc

Diesel will still not compress but there is alot less of diesel than if u suck up water

Yep, water in the air intake is replacing the air that's normally there and water definitely doesn't compress like air does!

Given the current monsoon season, I have been wondering if there would be a way of temporarily connecting up a snork, a la tumble dryer hose look, with the top anchored to the roof rails. Dunno if there is anywhere remotely sensible that a temp tube could be routed out of the engine bay without cutting tin(rust).

Yep, water in the air intake is replacing the air that's normally there and water definitely doesn't compress like air does!

Makeitfit did this and used the aircon pipe hole in the bulk head and went through there, he then sent it through the air vent, up the door pillar and out the roof. You could just have it in the cab and not cut the hole in the roof though.

Id just do it right and then its done, and they look cool. Iv just got to connect mine to the air box now and its finished.

I like a well done one, but this is me doing it! Also, I'd prefer to keep the truck fairly stock for insurance purposes at the moment, but I do like the idea of wading past stranded green ovals. :clap

If ur worried about insurance then would buy a proper kit not a DIY as u not at risk like a DIY kit in the insurance way of thinking

But in my mind isn't a snorkel a better idea as less probs to claim on insurance

My insurance concerns are the extra charges for any 'modifications' no matter how sensible they may be. I wouldn't expect to be able to claim for stupidly driving through exceptionally deep water anyway.

Certainly agree they make sense - did wonder about the exhaust, I realise that while engine is running the exhaust will be pushing out the water, but what if you stall or something? isn't that likely to duff up the innards too?

You carnt claim for stupidity Buzz. If you daft enough to go through a river and fook the engine, no insurance company is going to replace it.

No point in you having one anyway because
A, you would have to cut the body
B, you wouldnt want it getting wet and
C, your a tight arse. :lol

Makes no difference if DIY or not. All you say to them is you have put a snorkel on.

You do not try and start it again in water! Get a friend to pull you out. Then check if you have water in the airbox (could even happen with a snorkel). If not then just let the water come out of the exhaust with gravity.

C yes wouldn't pay for safari but others out there
