Had a bit of fun greenlaning in 4 wheel mode yesterday and had brill fun:lol
when it came to putting it back in 2 I shifted the stick revesed a bit and nowt.
the light stayed on tryed a couple more times and nowt.
drove off with the stick in 2 wheel with the light for a 100 yards or so and heaard a nasty tooth grating sound from the front:(
pulled up repeated the correct procedure and hey presto I was on my way again:clap
ive used 4 wheel a few times and it sometimes takes a couple of goes to get it back to 2.
I hope its nowt seriuos as I dont want to spend my hard earned tyre money on more repairs.
any ideas?
 
Strip and clean and lightly re grease both auto hubs on the front.

Whilst you are removing the auto hubs to service them check the brake rings. The brake rings have two lugs on the inside rim of the ring, check this for cracks as those lugs are quite delicate

im no mechanic but the service job looks easy enough.
brake rings? you mean the discs? or are there rings on the calipur?

The brake rings are part of the internal workings of the auto-hub. Remove the six allen-type screws to expose the internals of the auto-hub - if you then refer to the overhaul page for the hubs that will point to thre brake rings, they are what you should be checking.

The noise may well be the auto hubs but this will make no difference to engaging/disengaging 4WD as this is all done by the transfer box.

Agreed the lever will remove any drive from the transfer box. However the green 4wd light on the dash doesn't turn off until the hubs have unlocked and stopped the front driveshafts turning. Just because the front hubs are jammed and turning the front transmission system shouldn't be enough to cause major damage. This is of course assuming that the lever is actually taking it out of 4wd which I have heard in the past but not often and usually if there has been body or suspension lift mods.

I still think it'll be the autolocking hubs that are sticking, may even be damage to the brake ring lugs as these are prone to damage. Check the lugs for tiny cracks.
 
if the brake rings are foofed does that mean new hubs or can you buy them alone?

You can buy the brake rings seperate but think they're about 60 quid from stealers.
 
Always thought they were BREAK rings because they are designed to break under excess load. I think other makes call them SNAP rings.

Please correct me if Im wrong

Jim, I have to disagree with you on this one, well if my 1995 Mav Mk I is anything to go by...

There is a switch on the gear box that makes contact, when the gearbox is in 4 wheel drive, and has nothing to do with the front hubs, otherwise the later fixed hubs, or retrofit manuals would have high lighted this before.:bow

Well according to the manual here http://bebrs.pie-dabas.net/Webs/Terrano/R20/fa.pdf

They are called "Brake A" and "Brake B" as they come in a pair that is matched for one side.

"Snap Rings" are circlips.

But it doesn't really matter as everyone knew exactly what part I was refering to which of course is the main thing:thumbs

I have just noticed an error in the above manual...


Some drawings show the front Anti roll bar drop link as a vertical bar, with the hole in the ARB Horizontal.

Other drawings show the drop link with the fittings at 90 degrees and the hole in the ARB horizontal, which is what we have.

Now did anybody else notice that..?

Im not sure myself if its the hubs but its a start and it wont hurt to service them anyway.
if that doesnt fix it:doh it will have to be added to my mechanics list which is getting quite long:(

Correct:thumb2 I fitted manual hubs on mine and the light goes off when you move the lever into 2H hubs locked or unlocked.

Rustic, I didn't say the location of the switch. My 4wd has never gone off the instant that the lever is put back into 2wd. The light goes out a second or two after when the car is moving.

mine goes straight out when lever is moved:)
