Ok, so managed to run my clutch reservoir dry :-(

Topped it up, bled it

With assistance I bled the too, then slave. Didn't do the balance thingy pipe - the block the bleed nipple is in now "free floats" and is pretty old so don't want to break it....

Anyways... All good, pedal up high & all peaceful. Until. Two.days later I pop out for my morning coffee. As I drive down our track I go to press the pedal to change, and it is like it had disappeared!!

I fished around with my foot and finally realised the pedal has slammed hard to the floor!! WTF?

Got foot under and lifted it up whereupon it seemed to 'pop back' and work.

Until it did it again a bit later. Repeats frequently now.

Any bright ideas? When it works it's fine just like normal.

When I had this happen ( many years ago & on a different car) it turned out to be worn seals. May be worth changing them?

My memory on this is rather dim but it is to do with the return spring on the pedal, I think IIRC the nylon bushes wear or the spring has broken, also the pedal housing has a tendency to split, Rick

Thanks.

I'll rip the pedal system out & check.

May throw a new set of seals in top & bottom for good measure.

Yes what happens is the pedal drops and because the master rubbers are getting old the gentle pressure allows it to sink to the floor, but when you toe it up again your clutch feels normal, Rick

I have a brand new one for a 1995 Ford Maverick in stock at the moment if you need one :nenau

Sorry for the delay in replying - semi retirement prevents me form using the computer so much ;-)

Thanks for the kind offer. I am going to strip it and take a look next week and decide what to do.

OK, so after a lot of swearing I get the master cylinder off.

At a guess it is knackered. It sticks, and so far can't get the piston out at all - like the internal spring is compressed & fcuk'd. The piston should slide right once you have the circlip out, but currently not a chance. Might be able to 'compress air' it out I guess.

So I may have need for a new one? What's the damage?

Also, I can't get the bloody pedal box out. Seems to stick up against the tube to the side air vent - the studs can't clear a plate bonded to the bulkhead - and despite removing half the dash I can't seem to get the vent out of the way due to a screw buried up high which you can see but can't seem to reach straight on with a screwdriver.

Grrrr. :doh

Photos to follow.....

That's odd!!! This is an OEM brought in 1998 against a 1995 Maverick LWB 2.7 :nenau

I don't have any others in stock I'm afraid, you might need to look for new

Very!

Mines a 1995 TII SE - last of the old ones. Pretty sure the part was factory fitted. I've never touched it since I bought it over 10 years ago.

NP - thanks for looking.

Any ideas on why I can't the damn pedal box out, or how I get to the screw to remove the air vent feed?

It was meant to be simple!!

I didn't encounter that issue from memory when I did mine on my 1996 Facelift Maverick or my 2004 Terrano I'm afraid, I'll have to have a better look at the pics

Like Banshee I have removed and refitted several clutch pedal boxes and they fall out, is yours left hand drive? if so that could explain the difference, re the master cyl do you have room for the pipe to come out the side? if so it is easy to bend the pipe, Rick

Nope it's a UK right hooker.

Pipe comes out of the bottom of the master. Fiddly bottom nut but easy to remove it thereafter.

I expected the pedal assembly to just fall out. But.

There is a bracket/plate (factory) spot welded to the bulkhead as per the pix, so the assembly has to come back so the studs clear the bracket... probably the ends of the studs need to get 1 1/2" or so from the actual bulkhead to clear this bracket.

No bracket and it would probably be easy.

I'll try & get a better pic tomorrow. Forgot I have my sexy cheap wiggly web cam thing I can use!!
