Bought a another 2.7 diesel engine to replace my 1998 unit. However it's an earlier engine and as a different flywheel to mine. Is it possible to just swop the two cranks over or are there other differences ie so that my later crank is fitted into the older block?

did you buy a TD engine, or a TDI, and what year is the replacement, as there are differences....

Different Cranks

Markings are TD27A HJ49021Y RM22695. Have no vehicle details as I think it's been unsed in a boat as flywheel and sump both modified.
regards.

But having said that this unit was so widely produced, being used in taxis and all sorts, that I'd be a bit surprised if they changed the fundamental design - bolting on turbos and MAFs etc doesn't impact the basic engineering which needs an expensive re-tooling to accommodate.....I mean why bother going to such expense when nothing has really happened that require a substantial beefing-up of the basic block and bits? Nissan certainly wouldn't if they didn't have to.

But it could be the flywheel was for a different application?

What happened to your old engine to cause it to fail out of interest?

Very low compression in cylinder2 and low in 3 caused I by badly scored bores, from I think previous turbo failure. Thinking about a re-bore of original engine but seems cheaper to get another engine than re-bore.

bummer, sorry to hear that. Its usually because a previous owner failed to maintain properly...:(

Yes, when I bought the terrano the previous owner said that the AA had recovered him and said the head gasket had gone, so he must have known what to problem was as it was blowing oil out through the turbo and the turbo was OK or had been replaced! Thinking rather than stripping two engines down may now just strip the original engine and get a re-bore.

I was at a breakers recently who had engines they said they never sold t2 engines 'no one wants them' probably as they are so good. So there must be a few around have you tried our resident breakers 'terranobreakershropshire' and 'cnfabs'. A complete engine would be the best option surely :thumb2

the breakers I was at was http://www.equicar.co.uk/
and they had TDI engeines on their racks!
