Diesel or oil alternative

Hi guys just wondering could someone give me some advice on alternative fuels to diesel pros and cons is worth it.

I have a 2000/2001 terrano 2.7 tdi with 157000 on the clock and still runs like a dream.

Your thoughts please.

yes i agree, bio is the way.

I suffered a few bad batches from commercial suppliers and I now make it myself from used cooking oil, find a good supplier and get using it...

How do you tell if its a good batch your buying or a bad batch?
I have found a supplier near to me (which is heaven sent, or so i thought) but I put some of his stuff in my beast and it thucked it right up.
Smoke bellowing out the back, top speed of 40 mph, pulled over two times by mr plod, i dilluted the tank with another £50 of dino and it got better.
I then ran the tank to almost dry and then filled her up with dino to the brim.
She has been good as gold Since.
Is there a test that i can do on the bio diesel before putting it in my beast to assure me of the quality?

I use my trucks for every day work and clock up a good old mileage so take full advantage of any fuel savings so I can be having as much fun as possible in them.

as far as I can make out it is a real risk, there is a Co about 20 miles from me that advertises on a lot of motors that smell like chip shops so when I was in the area I filled up, couple of months later when I did a service the fuel filter was like lard, it was a wonder the motor ran so my advice be very wary, this by the way was when I ran a Xzantia, I am on petrol now so no problem, I might add I run a 1975 Lister on 25% old engine oil and since I have been adding acetone it runs perfect, no smoke and copes happily at full load, Rick

yep can do, but just change fillers a little more till all clean

No you wasn't lucky. You bought from a quality producer who has his batches independently tested before sale. His products will always meet standards set for selling biodiesel. 9000 litres a day not a kitchen sink setup. Take a look.

so where do i find a great supplier like that in my local area?
there isnt any as far as i am aware.
is there a special and magical website that one could enter their details and get a wonderous list of local suppliers and their selling prices?

It is quite a simple process once you know how, yes there is some initial outlay which is soon re-cooped once you start manufacturing.

Ready made set ups are available from various sources or if you have some diy and plumbing experience you could make your own, as i did.

The one thing that was stressed to me when i begun using bio was that because it is a natural based product it will clear all the crap and sediment out of your tank and fuel lines and dump them in the fuel filter, which is what it is there for, so changing the fuel filter after a couple of tankfuls is essential.

Just to put some perspective on the costs; diesel at the moment is around £1.40 per litre however, it costs approximately 25p per litre to manufacture bio if the oil can be collected for free...

And there's my problem. There isn't a single take away or restaurant round here that doesn't already sell or give their waste oil to a major recycler

also alot of take aways/restaurants have to give back the wvo as part of the price of the svo.

I think you have to look for the little guys using veg oil, who do not have enough to attract a commercial collector. The buy back price at present is about 28p/L. You can find it on feabay for 40p-£1/L. I get mine from a guy in Lincs who has a contract to remove Rapeseed oil that has been used as a lubricating oil in the food industry, so it has no water and no free fats but gets filtered to 1 micron all for 65p/L.
