Well if you did, you're a Grade 1 plonker - just like me!

But the good news is it doesn't matter.

Many years ago on a very late on a dark cold rainy night on the M6 I pulled into the services with my 2.7 TDi's tank almost empty...kids were moaning like stink in the back so I wasn't paying attention and filled up with unleaded.

Didn't notice what I'd done so jumped back in, floored the throttle as usual and vanished into the night. I think from memory I got about 5-6 miles before the damn thing sputtered to a halt, at which point I had one of those 'flashback' moments and realised what I'd done.

Waited an hour for a towtruck which took me to a little garage in Grange-over-Sands, where the next day i was charged about £100 to completely drain and flush the system, but since the old girl has done about 110k miles since then, I think its safe to say there were no ill effects!

So for gods sake don't do it, but if you do, its only your wallet that will get damaged in the process...!

I put a couple of gallons of diesel in a petrol motor once then when i notice topped off with UL.

Smoked like a bitch for a while:D

Nothing wrong with a bit of upper cylinder lubricant:lol

a mate of mine swears by putting a bit of unleaded in his deisel every month to give the system a good clean.
dont know if it works but dont see why not as the injector cleaner you buy is basicly kerrosene.:nenau
his motor is still going strong a lwb shogun.

I also know a truck mechanic that puts some in with the diesel to clear the emissions just before it goes for mot

some people put a gallon in a tank to stop waxing in winter, wont do any harm, certainly clears the system out.

yep the polo flies along since Sam put unleaded in it:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
He was getting petrol for the lawn mowers and thought he would top up the diesel polo:lol:lol too
Glad it was him and not me I would not have heard the end of it:lol:lol:lol

Anyway we had it drained but now it runs better than ever:thumbs

Put a gallon in last year at night,so topped up with diesel no after effects yet.

Hi Lacroupade
Half filled mine with petrol and drove from london to shrewsbury made a noise but with two complaining cats and the radio on barely noticed no ill effects done another 65,000 miles.
Tony:D

From what I've read I don't think we'd be quite so lucky with a modern common-rail diesel...

It used to be common practice to add a bit of petrol to a tank of diesel in winter to stop the diesel waxing at low temperatures. Nowadays, the oil companies add additives to prevent waxing.
