Hi all, first post here - so be gentle.

I have a chance to buy an X reg Terrano at a very good price, the problem is none of the dials are working; Speedo, rev counter, temp or fuel. Also the odometer isn't recording any new miles. Its done about 100,000 miles and was MOT'd in May, so they must of been working then.

Is this an expensive error to put right, if it could be done for a couple of hundred quid It'd still be a good price. Could this be a sign of bigger problems to come?

Thanks for your time,
Mark.

Blimey, thats a very quick response - Thanks very much!

So it might be as simple as not plugging the wires in after the dials have been taken out, or the unit itself could be broke? If so its a fairly simple fix - Thanks again.

Also, I've searched for an answer to this and not found anything, but how many miles is the 2.7 in the Terrano good for?

the engine is the same unit ( minus the turbo ) that is fitted in london black cabs ....... i leave you to draw your own conclusion :naughty

i think you will find they can do 300,000 mls + if looked after, (black cab engine). :thumb2

Hi Mark

I have a W reg 2000 with the same problem I have tried several breaker sites for a replacement with no luck. If you do a Google for instrument cluster repairs there are several on there. The one that Briggie has put a link to on EBay is not the right one that you want it has the digital readout at the bottom not the top. This is a common fault on these mainly due to dry solder joints. I have tried to locate the fault with a hairdryer on the circuit board. It did get the unit working again but I have not as yet located the specific fault. The unit will probably fail again as this seems to be an intermittent fault.

NB - if you do try the hairdryer method do not get the board too hot.
If anyone has one of these units spare or knows of a source for them I would be grateful.

Thanks again for all the responses, this is a great forum.

The Terrano I was thinking about buying I'm going to leave, some parts of the sellers story don't add up;
First it was a part-ex, now its his uncles he used to use for fishing at the weekend.
Also the miles on the odometer are the same as the last MOT, so the dash stopped working exactly the same day as the MOT - pretty unlucky really.
And he thinks it done about 17,000 miles since the MOT in May - which equates to lots of weekend fishing trips...

I'm going to look for a different one with less discrepancies, but thanks for the info. on the engine - If I look after it and don't do anything silly, it'll last a good while.
