cleaned pump out bled up and the bas***d wont start walked away tonight before i beat it to death will have another look tomas if all else fails will try and get another zexel pump or better still buy another with bosch pump on

:doh, what a pain in the ass, did you check the fuel shut off solenoid, you might have pulled the wire off, it's what stops the engine when you turn key off, just a thought. :thumb2:augie

i have no idea about pumps, but is it possible that the fault was the pump in the first place, and somehow removal/cleaning has finished it off?

does it turn over at all?

well, as i say, i know nothing of pumps, but i hope you sort it!

yes turns over stop solenoid appears to be working attempts to fire every so often starting to think iv bled it wrong or killed the pump completly

Forgive me for asking, but how did you "clean" the pump out? Rick

took 4 flat screws out lifted top of washed out wiv petrol then blew it out with a compressor air line lined litlle bobble with the sliding peice on the shaft as its designed i assume to fit in that hole then put the four screws back in is this right ??

mum nearly KILLED me when I put some of my car in the dishwasher... no idea why, came out loverly and clean...

I have no specific info on this particular pump, but no you should not have treated your pump this way, would be better left alone, its not as though you could have gained anything, sorry, Rick

mine will be in the crusher if it dont start tomas then the wife will kill me

I wish I could offer some realistic advice, but aside from bleading out the air there is not a lot, I can suggest other than when cranking are you opening at least one injector pipe at the injector, this aids air removal on the high pressure side, it will bleed eventually but quicker if pipe loosened, just to give you an insight to the machining tolerences of fuel injection systems and why you should not dismantle them unless you are familiar, if you take an injector element and remove the highly polished needle and hold the needle in your hand while placing the body on a cool surface after only 30 seconds or so you will not be able to reinsert the needle until the two have near equalised in temperature, if you can then the injector is worn out, so how much dirt did you wash in with your petrol wash? Rick

forgive me if this is a stupid question, but would petrol damage the seals in a diesel pump?

Quite likely, depends on the seals, but most would not like petrol, I have stripped and rebuilt more pumps than I can remember and would only ever use diesel to wash them off, and that was only to wash of any contamination that I had introduced, not to clean the pump bits themselves, even the acid on your hands can be detremental to a finely engineered piece of kit like a fuel injection pump, and as for the new common rail 35000 psi new ones I would not get involved at all, and I won the south of england Perkins Fitter of the year championship 1972, Rick

As for the new common rail 35000 psi new ones I would not get involved at all,

WOW is that the pressure, no wonder they say do not dismantle the system on my wifes Picasso, I have heard that this pressure would cut through bone, and more.

I remember on a tv programme, using high pressure water to cut concrete, now I can see why.

If it aint broke.... don't fix it.

I have seen an 8000mile old Pug 407 2.2 hdi that came in on 3 cylinders , a chuffing noise and an oil leak....

The long and short of the investigation was that one of the injectors had stuck open after the nozzle overheated due to a software fault with the DPF regeneration.

The result was that there was a hole cut in the top of the piston, another hole half way down the bore and a matching hole on the side of the sump where a *very* fine spray of fuel was coming out as well as the oil leak.

I will leave you guys to imagine the consequences of an invisable jet of fuel from an CR system on human flesh.

Mr Pugeot sent a covered trailer for said car, and it was returned abit later with a brand new engine FOC.

not starting

I think it will be air in the system. I did the same thing with my old Merc 250TD and flattened the battery after changing the fuel filter.

Re-charged battery overnight and flattened it again.

Just about to get it trailered into work when a neighbour came round with a can of diesel cold start.

Gave it a couple of squirts and it started, conked out, more spray started, conked out finally one more spray then ran like a pig for a few minutes and then it was OK.

I have never changed a friggin diesel fuel filter since. My R3mR is due about now and I am dreading it !!

At work we never use quick start spray because it can lock up an engine very easy.
so we use maintenance spray which doesnt lock the engine up .( the sort if you spray over a lighter it will burn).
used it on my petrol hedge cutter so start it after re build.
