I find the headlights (both dipped and main beam) to be utter crap! I wonder if anyone else thinks that these lights are rubbish, or is it just mine?

With my old Mk1 I smashed a headlight (or rather someone else did) and the transformation when I bought a NEW headlight was so good I went out and bought another new one (cheap off ebay) for the other side - massive difference, like night and day.

Over time the reflectors tarnish and well stop reflecting.

It can be worthwhile cleaning them. Remove the headlight and first swill out with hot water to shift the easy stuff. Then let it drain a bit before spraying in some liquid (not foam) glass cleaner, work this around so it coats the whole lense and reflector. Then with a bit of rag in the end of a stick or stiff wire clean all the surface you can get at. Then rinse a coupl of time with really hot water so you heat the unit up and then put it to dry, hole side down in the airing cupboard or other hot place - works a treat, I've done a few that way over the years.

Also good quality bulbs are worth the extra, cheap chinese produced stuff are rubbish. Buy GE, Phillips or Osram (check for german manufacture on Osram as they ave 2 grades). These ar the onkly 3 manufacturers used as OE on cars to my knowledge.

I use Osram NightBreaker +90% high efficiency and the are definitely better than standard bulbs, still want to rewire the fogs to use as spots/driving lights though - must go out when you dip the headlights - should be easy enough.
