OK here goes...

I have got a new engine sump plug washer, it's a weird looking thing. Is there a certain way it has to be fitted??

Normally you would screw the sump plug in from the side shown in your picture, the weird shape is to make sure the sump plug is retained on the plug when you remove it, it gets crimped on, so it doesn't wash off with the dirty oil.
I think.... lol...:nenau

So, as in the picture, the sump plug threads face the washer so the cut out part comes into contact with the sump first?

Sorry to be thick

depends on your particular style of sump plug, if the threads stop a couple of mm sort of the head with relief between then screw your plug into the washer as from this side as in your pic, ie the smaller diameter towards the sump, if however the threads go right to the face then it matters little which way it goes, it is all about keeping the washer centered on the plug, Rick

That is the genuine or at least same as genuine sump plug washer. I did say in an earlier thread that they were a strange shape that is meant to squash. If you want me to be an anarak the nissan part number is 11026 61000
Nissan have not changed the design of those washers since the day in the mid 80s I started with them.

I didn't know fitting a new sump plug washer would be so technical :lol What happened to the good old plain flat washer (of which I have loads) :naughty

I have found that they can leak after a couple of sump drains so I guess they are a use once item. I bought a box of copper washers from Aldi I think it was and they are the old fashioned thick type and work a treat.

My old Mini had a sump plug with a built in rubber seal it seemed to work okay but the head was very soft and soon rounded off despite me being careful & using a decent ring spanner.
