As the title suggests im having a rite mare finding where its located and which sensor to buy.

I have a Y reg 2001 Nissan Terrano TDi Automatic Hitachi MAF etc... the management light is on and says its the crank sensor and i have all the symptoms such as engine stalling and running lumpy etc.

Where should the sensor be. Ive given my reg to a few motor factors and they have supplied me with a sensor which does not match the one ihave

the photos below are what ive pinched of this site. can anyone confirm what years they are

Cheers.
im pretty sure the sensor i found at the front is the one, its the same as the second picture above. the only difference is that mine is mounted the other way round (cable at the top)

only thing I can think of if poss either urs is in wrong way or the one in photo might be in wrong way either way it will still work as it should do unless urs is faulty which sounds like it is

if it helps, mine was at the front as in your photo - I suspect that is the one.

as far as I know if there is one at the front, then that's correct, other wise it would be at the back and nothing at the front..if that makes sense....its late!!

Mine is on the back

Between bulkhead and the back if engine

Yes that is the crank sensor, it has three wires one is a screen the other two should give an ohms reading, from memory think it was 1500, but yours will read something around that or nothing, if nothing then it is no good, does not matter what way round it is it is only a magnet with a coil round it which pics up a point on the timing gear, if yours has failed I may have one, will look later, Rick

yes, as Rick says, that's the CKP and as its only a magnet it will lose effectiveness over time and when it gets hot. They aren't cheap to buy new, but personally I would buy new unless you can get a used from a low mileage vehicle/younger vehicle.

When I did mine, I messed about with other used ones, and they were no good, but once I fitted a brand new one all was well again.

I found it, its a Bosch and reads 850 ohms, if yours is Hitachi then it wont fit, Rick

Cheers mate. Mine is hitachi. I took it off this morning and checked the resistance it fluctuated between 1400 and 1900 when I passed some metal past it

just out of interest my ford maverick had a hitachi, couldnot find oner anywhere apart from fords , jut under £300...... I THINK NOT, just fitted a second hand one,
bosh one from a terrano smaller than the hitachi, seems to run fine at the momemt, will give it a run to and from work tomorrow too make sure.

OK what you need to do to see if it is faulty is do the same test but borrow a hair drier and heat it up, what happens in the fine wire has a fracture and all held in place by potting compound so often works fine cold but as warms up wires part causing OC, Rick

this is what mine looks like. completely different from the Bosch one

The bosch plug fits my 98 Terrano tdi and goes near the bell housing and my 2001 goes into the block at the front just under the head. also its a bigger sensor and a different shaped plug
