thanks, what about the black stuff on the sensor? is that oil? is it bad?!

anyone breaking a maverick/terrano?!!

could do with getting a cps cheap to try in mine, see if it fixes the issues i am getting...

I get the impression that the cps i have isnt the correct one for my engine due to the difference-mine has one "lug" to bolt it onto the engine, but there are two bolt holes.

Also I noticed that the bolt was correct, and had metal washer to pack it out, the sensor had a tiny indent that seemed to coincide with a small notch on the inside where the sensor sits...

Mine only has one bolt:)
It will be oily as it's in the engine.I think it detects magnets on the camshaft or something:augie
You can check if it's ok by reading it's resistance across two of the wires(see emanuel for details). Should be about 900 ohms but all the ones I checked were up around 1500 ohms:cool:

I did wonder that, I will try that, although I suspect I simply need a new one!

hello again!

well, been a while with this, but i finally got a cheap second hand ckp sensor from a breakers, they say all working. fitted it today, cleared the codes and allowed it to warm up for about 20 mins, then took for a short drive over some rough track. During this the car seemed to drive ok, the check engine light didnt pop on-but i wasnt much over 2k rpm or going very fast at all. Got back, pulle donto drive, revved it up to 3/4k rpm, seemed to hold but when i let go it seemed like it was going to stall, and the engine check light came on again, then went off, car didnt stall and continued to run ok.

Checked the codes again, got 47 again, ckp sensor incorrect signal, whihc is why i replced the sensor in the first place. Now I understand it COULD be the sensor, becaus eit isnt new, but its likely that the sensor is ok, the breakers say it was SO I am wandering now if it is the wiring. see my previous picture, the two wires (big grey one to smaller one) are joined by a metal coupler thingy (not soldered), could this be the problem? can any one see thiers? I have no point of reference at all!

helps!

I also tried to test the ohms. i am not very good with a multimeter, but everything i tried resulted in very low readings, nothing near 900. i did this without the key in the ignition (i read that the multimeter use its own battery??) any advice on this?

ok, extra! i checked the manual, and although i dont 100% understand it, i checked pins 1 + 2 as bext i understand, and didnt get anything near 900 ohms, i got 0.44, thats with the multimeter set at 2k i think. if i se it at 200, i got nothing. I also tried to trace back the wires, and for the life in me i cant find the other end! I trace the big black wire tubing, this goes under the fuse box into a bigger casing, then various smaller ones distribute out. i took the battery out, checked under there, nothng, tried those two connectors next to the coolant-nothing (asin cant see the same colour wires) so i am lost!?? i noticed one tubing going down the front and under the engine bay, but didnt think that would be it?

Bloody sensors,grr:(
I had ( may still have the same prob). The wires go back to the ECU and thats the only other place to go and check continuity:eek: Depends where yours is, on mine its behind the center console and need to take half the car apart to get to it. I did mine and after all that found no prob with continuity and got same resistance as in the engine bay and on the censor alone:doh
I'm convinced there is some other problem that shows up as crank sensor. BUT WHAT?
I'm still confused, but that could be the beer:p
Check your meter battery too. As if the sensor fails rhe resistance goes UP!

tell me about it, as far as I can see, this is the only problem i have now with the Mav-all other codes have been cleared/fixed and have not come back, but this one is fairly major i'd say as it effects timing and fuel injection, I could really do with some advice!

Send a PM to Toolbox, maybe he can help:augie
I think there's also some connection with No1 injector, best do a search.

well, PM sent, no reply as yet, anyone got ANY clues as to checking the wiring correctly?

Like I said, the only way is to test resistance of the sensor and then do the same thing again at the ECU end.If you get the same result at the ecu then the wiring is ok.

ok, some info from toolbox, ecu is either under footwell, or centre console, so going to try and find it today because its perfectly possible that the wire is faulty-i have had to replace the earth wires in the engine bay due to corrosion, so no reason not to check the ckp sensor wires as well...
