does everybody else have to fill from half to max every month? :(

only when i have had the usual small drip from under the water pump

though it could be the radiator cap?

but to be honest at that level of loss i would keep an eye on it, but dont loose sleep over it

hi there i use to until i found out that my thermostat was gone i replaced it 6 months ago and i have never needed to top

I'd go with Planks first thought about the water pump. however have a look round at hose joints and things to see if there is any crusty mess which could indicate a small leak.

I would go with what Plank & JT have said as I was loosing water & the 1st leak was the coolant pipes & later on found I had a very small from the water pump  I would check your carpets for dampness incase it's the heater matrix

Might pay to hold on a bit and think over the proceedure for checking coolant level. You might not have a problem at all.
Check coolant when motor is cold and it usually stays about the midway mark. Which is where it should be.
When the engine gets hot the coolant "expands" into the reservoir and the level rises almost to the max.mark. Conversely, when the engine cools off again the water "contracts" back into the engine block, radiator etc. and resumes its normal mid way level.
The water on your carpets can be from a variety of other sources. There are threads on "water in passenger footwell" and suchlike.
The heater matrix is a tricky long winded, expensive job. Better to eliminate all other causes first.
But-----like I said----you may not have a problem at all, judging from the facts you give so far. The fact that you are topping up each month may only mean that you are making your "overflow" dump a bit of excess each month, (the bit you are putting in to reach the max mark).

Hope this makes sense. Good luck.

good reply CHASTER! I am sure i have fallen into this trap with vehicles in the past, it is born out of paranoia at a suspected leak!

I have never topped up the rad water in my mav and I've had the vehicle from new.
I did put in some rad weld approx 5 years ago as a precaution though.

Only coolant top up I've had to do was when the thermostat housing warped and leaked slightly.
