Oh and for the fan, I dont hear it when i start it, but when i drive down the road the first few meters of acceleration i hear it then it dies down, now ill have to drive it and listen to see if it does it all the time or not because i dont really remember hearing it after that
If that's the case that's the viscous dead then I'd go new water pump

I think this after market water pump has a removable visc fan clutch, Id hate to get a whole new pump again if i can replace just the clutch

yh the viscous fan should roar on start up and then settle down

These engines do run on the cool side.i ran my old one for a good few months with no viscous fan after it destroyed its self.
Have you bled the air out of the system?
Easy to do.
From cold first remove the radiator cap.make sure the heater is on full on its hot setting.
Start up the truck and get someone to fast idle the truck up to temp while you keep an eye on the radiator.any air in the system will bubble out of the radiator.
Top as necessary as its warming up.

i don't know about the tdi , but my td certainly ran cool

just had a thought  ...... the sensor in my bottom rad hose was caked in rust stuff , which affected the reading , but once cleaned up it was ok .... still never went over half tho

You had a sensor in the bottom rad hose, was this a standard feature?
Is it something that Automatics have? Or maybe Mistrals?

My Td doesn't have one in the bottom hose, and mine is a manual UK sourced. Badged Ford of course.

The engine temperature sensor on my Mav, is at the top of the engine, front nearside. There are three of them side by side.
I made a note once, which was which.

I believe Mistral's had the auto transmission cooler fitted in the bottom tank of the radiator. So in that instance, the temperature at the bottom of the radiator probably has significance for the transmission control unit?

good point ray , perhaps it did have a link to the auto box , but whatever ...... once we cleaned it the guage seemed to respond better . and yes the mistrals ( maybe other autos too ) had the atf cooler at the bottom of the rad , the sensor I referred to though was in the bottom rad hose not the atf cooler , although like I said they could be linked I suppose

I've had the lower temp reading on both of the T2's i've owned & both times after replacing the thermostat it has fixed the problem & the gauge went back to sitting just under 1/2 way only did this truck last month:augie If it was the viscus fan stuck on you would hear it roar all of the time (normally it can be heard for the first 1/4 mile then go's quiet) replaced the water pump on my last truck & it had a faulty viscus as it roared all of the time so got a replacement under warranty but the 3 water pumps i've looked at not one of them could you remove the viscus from

yeah mine roars like that, though its hard to stop the fan from moving when its running takes quite a bit of force to slow it, so maybe it is jammed..
