Cool Box

Just picked up a new one from Halfords 40LTR comes with 240v plug and cig lighter plug. Not fully tested yet but quiet on start up but for £80 after looking around hopefully a bargain.

Most use a solid state heat pump, not sure that is the correct name for it, but runs on 12v and if you reverse the connections it makes the inside hot instead of cold, good for keeping your pasties/pies hot, not sure how the 240 works in this case, maybe it is a cold only version, or got a hot/cold switch, but they are very efficient, using them on laptops now I think as my new Lenovo is as cool as can be, Rick

Is that a sprint st955i or rs955i in your display picture?!?!?

I'm getting awful excited :naughty

After Rick's reply have totally got hold of the wrony end of the stick here:eek::eek::hmh very confused.
The bike is a daytona T595 Alex pre runner to the 955i. Finally managed to get pictures uploaded hope they meet with your approval:thumbs:D

Peltier is the word you are looking for....

The 240V, is just a case of stepping down to 12v, and rectifying, as most now have a Hot/Cold switch to do the voltage reversal, rather than reversing the plug like you did in the old days.

Meant to say I have a 1994 Hella one in bright Pink and light Blue, that was an optional extra with the Vitara.

Why is that? these devices are used in cool boxes and a multitude of other applications, I was merely describing the technology behind the application, Rick

thanks Clive, knew there was a term but mind just went blank, just read your ferret story, hope your pecker has recovered, ouch big time, Rick

I bought a Halfords Cooler/Warmer 40ltr a few years ago.

If you want to use it in a vehicle it works best if you get it "cold" by running it up in the house for a couple of hours before putting it in your vehicle with your cold stuff. It isn't great at getting stuff cooled, but it's not bad at keeping stuff cool that was already cool. (I think that makes sense).

We got a camping gaz cool box, only cools and I managed to pick up a mains power supply for it. Nice unit and does cool but I find cool everything first and even use an ice block or two, thinks better at keeping cool rather than cooling. I find the fan at the top tends to drag dust in to the vents and looks mucky.

Not sure what they use to insulate if anything, I'd love to open it up and add insulation.

With you now. This is why I don't normally post.

When I was a teenager my mates dad once made a coolbox at work. Just a simple plywood box but well made. Lined with 40mm polystyrene wrapped in foil, even the lid. No gaps at all, really well made and far better than any shop bought box. Maybe that's the way to go and line it with kingspan off cuts or something.

Thanks chaps
I like the look of this one

I've got the 40 ltr Halfords one too http://www.halfords.com/motoring-tr...fords-40-litre-mains-and-12v-electric-coolbox
Top tip, buy it online and collect. I got it much cheaper that way. You could probably get it via Quidco too. 4 or 5% cashback not to be sniffed at :sly
I use mine in the camper van. As said above I get it on mains 1st to get cool with cool foods in etc.
Then I keep it on in the van till sleeping time
My only criticism of it is the noisy fan.
It also works any way up :thumbs

I've got a kampa 40 ltr 12/240 volt jobbie.
Works ok and my beer is always cold when camping.
I've got another old one as a back up, can't remember the name off hand but sounds German. Gets frost on the inside it's that cool:cool:
